Question about charcoal cabin air filters

How long can you use the cabin air filters for? My car has about 40k miles now, is it time for a change of filters? Or can you clean them off and pop them back in?

Oh, and here's a bonus question. LOL. Does anyone know how many O-rings are supposed to be on the oil dipstick? I only see one O ring on there, but it looks like there's another groove for an extra O-ring, but I only have the bottom one on there. Hope it didn't crack and fall into the engine.

i thought the cabin filters were supposed to be replaced every oil service or inspection, about q15k miles.... that's what I do anyway.

from memory, i think i have two o rings on my dipstick, but not 100% certain, and car is parked too far away to go check right now...

The cabin's activated charcoal microfilter gets replaced during Inspection I and II.

Two dipstick o-rings. If you are missing the top one, I don't expect it fell inside. More likely outside the engine.

$tealer charges an outrageous $$$ for those filters. Better off buying them on-line at a discount and popping them in yourself. IMO BTW 2 o-rings on dip-stick, just ran into the garage to check.

Melted O rings are not gonna help the carbon build up issue. You better take her for a nice agressive drive to blast it out the rear end.

Interestingly, in South Africa, the E39 M5's were fitted with the standard, non-charcoal cabin air filters. It was only the 530d that was fitted with charcoal units.

I recently enquired about this when I purchased a set of charcoal ones, and was told that the diesel models emit more smelly fumes hence it is a prerequisite for charcoal units.

Might be a load of BS but the charcoal ones sure do take better care of those ugly noxious fumes in traffic!
