My Dinan S1 vs Dad's 1960 Corvette who wins ?

My Dad has been a classic Vette guy forever, he has had this 1960 red roadster Corvette for 20years now, and it is in good shape, everything stock.

He was teasing me last night, saying once he get's his new clutch installed he will blow the doors off me Now this Vette has less than 250hp and weighs 3,000lbs, and my little Dinan S1 is pushing approx 430hp, but is also 4,000lbs ? Dad also said they do not rate horse power the same as they did back then ? Meaning his 250hp does not sound like alot, but that is measured differently, not from the wheels, but the engine. He said Cubic Inches and how many liters says alot about the engine too ?

Anyway's I shall get a video up once we race this summer, along with my Brother's orange Porsche 914

I think most will agree you will roast him...from 0-100 mph...especially anything over 100 mph the E39 M5 Dinan S1 is just gone!...but I could be wrong.

What do you guys think? Maybe if it were a well kept or even a hopped up old 427 Corvette it might have a decent shot but not really?

Hmmm...

Yeah, you'll smoke him. Not only because of the power to weight, your actually about 3700, not 4000, but also because of the gearing. He's running a 4 speed. They did underrate the power of the muscle cars for a number of reasons, mostly insurance. They measured at rear wheel horsepower(brake horsepower) instead of crank so do the math with 20% added to his 250 he may be 300 at the crank. You'll still smoke him carrying 700 extra lbs with another 130 HP.

The curb weight of the 1960 corvette with the 283 C.I. was 2950 Lbs. so he's on the money their, his HP was 245 with the double barrell carb option. Single barrell carb HP was closer to 225 HP.

Your car is lighter than stock because you got rid of the stock exhaust which is saving you about 50 lbs. All in all, if you get hooked out of the hole and and don't roast em in 1st. He'll nothin but your M5 badge.

You'll have two car lengths on him by 100 mph.

the only way he will win, if you stall it! A 427 completely stock he would have a better chance, but I agree with Kalvin, you would still win. 454 or 427 with mods would start causing some problems.

You have 430hp and he has 250hp? I don't car how they used to measure the HP, you have 1.5x more. Can't wait for the video.

In the old days, they used a different standard for horsepower. When the M5 was rated, it was rated under a much more conservative standard. He MIGHT have 250hp, but there is really no telling. To say the least, you'd have to F it up pretty bad to lose this.

Prior to SAEJ1349 power spec required measurement, Detroit was wild with horsepower claims (i.e. prior to 1972). A rule of thumb measurement is the take the "claimed HP" and multiply it times 0.80 (i.e reduce it by 20%). So the so-called 454 Vette with "450HP" turns into something like 360hp at best if it was measured under modern J1349 test conditions. If you look at 1/4 mile data, especially trap speeds, of just about all the muscle cars, a stock M5, versus a factory stock version of them, will win every time.

Even if he had a 1970 454 Vette in pure factory condition, you would still win assuming equal drivers...no problem actually.

Very few of the muscle cars were under-rated. The vast majority of them were way over-rated as I mentioned above. They put the engines on a dyno with no parasitic drag (i.e. no water pump, no alternator, no A/C compressor), often used custom dyno headers and exhaust, and provided optimum intake air into an unfiltered carb. Hence they ended up with power claims way above what a properly conducted SAE J1349 test would provide where everything has to be tested as installed in the vehicle.

So his 250hp would be more likely around 200HP if it was tested under J1349 specs.

Cheers,
Chuck

You'll definitely win. What was fast then just isn't fast anymore.

The M5 is even faster then supercars from the 80's like the Ferrari Testerossa.

Yep. In fact, can anyone think of a *stock* 60/70's muscle car that would beat us in the qm? My *guess*, and it may be wrong, would be a 427' Ford engine...Thunderbolt or Comet Caliente'. Possibly a 426' Hemi. I don't know...I see these cars every week, and it's kinda cool to know that I can blow most of them off the road in air-conditioned comfort.
