Crunching noises from steering... (was: Bikini Babes....)

...could have the same weird noises coming from their steering as I do! (Since nobody responded, I thought I'd try it again under a different heading ) Crunching sounds at full crank (slow speed/parking lot). Quick look by mechanic doesn't show anything unusual. Coincidentally(?) happened one day after doing standing/smoking 180 in parking lot. Any ideas?

Do you "feel" the crunching in the steering wheel as well?
At full lock, is it more pronounced when turning right than turning left?

Could it simply be that you are driving on the tire treads that extend around the lip of the tire? At full lock the tire does lean over a bit.

I have the same symptoms and just had an alignment done recently. No problem IMO.

Hadn't noticed it before. Even the mechanic "heard something".

It could be the bushes in your wishbones, mine made an awfull noise even whilst driving I could hear them creaking and moaning, NOT EXPENSIVE so don't worry - My local stealer said that it was common on the 7 series and V8 5 series because of the weight of the engines....

Being that I'm not familiar with the problem your Beast is having, I figured I can contribute to this thread some how.

What do you guys think? At least now the thread won't be too misleading

Petey Pop,

Thanks for taking the time to clear up the technical jargon, and make it easy to understand the issue.

There remains room for even more clarity, but this is definitely a strong step forward to resolving the mystery.

I have the same issue. I have the extended leather option, thus my steering column is leather, not plastic. Always thought this was a leather into leather sound, but not I am thinking twice about it. Hear it mostly as when I do sharp (full lock) turns, like when maneuvering and such. Any ideas? It is definitely from the steering column and it sounds like two elements rubbing into eachother, but no judder felt on the steering wheel. Don't think it is mechanical, just a surface to surface rub. Weird...

Here's an extra piece of the puzzle: it only seems to be doing it now if my foot's on the brakes.

Wait a minute, whats a brake?

I had at one time the idler pulley loose some of its tension. With just a twist of the a wrench it was gone, unless the engine was cold and at full lock.

now about the main issue here, is there a higher res. of that sample picture?
I want to check the weaving of the carbon.
