my girlfriend and i were going south on 101 and all of a sudden my girlfriend commented about someone closely tailing us. it soon moved to the right lane, and i saw that it was a silver porsche. as it passed, i saw that it was a gt3. it was a night, so i didn't get a good look, but can assume it was a 993, as the 996 is unavailable in the states. i tried to search for info on the car, but all i can find was performance numbers. can someone explain what exactly this car is, or point me to a site where i can find info? just curious. thanks in advance.
You can't always go by the badge on the back of cars. You are correct...the 911GT3 (996) was never federalized. As far as I know there is no such thing as a 993 version of the GT3 and even if there was...it never made it to the US. There are people out there....and you might find this hard to believe...who actually think that it is "cool" to try to make their car into something it isn't. These people are referred to as posers. I would just assume that the guy bought the badging for $50 and glued it on.
why would the 996 not be available in the states? I see GT3's all the time here in Canada...they are easy to spot with thier wierd looking rear spoiler. I don't know why something would be available in Canada but not in the states?
Like Robb, I am also curious. I do recall the car magazine that first road tested the GT3 doing it in Europe somewhere but I still was under the impression that it was available to US customers. Especially for racing applications.
it says directly on Porsche.com that the gt3 doesn't qualify for the US emmisions...but i think that it can be ordered in Canada...i have seen 2 or 3, probably the same car everytime i see it. GT3's are a waste of $$ in my opinion...it has 360 HP, the GT2 has 464 hp...there is not competition...plus i even think the porshe turbo 996 would be a better deal than a GT3...
The car I am thinking of has a greater horsepower number over the 996TT. I distinctly recall the magazine article featuring the car commenting on the fact that this is the most powerful 911 ever produced. It's rear wheel drive to add to the fun factor. Are we talking about the same car?
no, the GT2 is the one you're reffering to (0-60 in 3.9 seconds)...its probably the next fastest excelerating car to the MacF1 (and now apparently the new Viper)
