Leaking tappet cover seal

Hi people,

The beast is at the dealership...again. I had a seeping tappet cover seal replaced about 20 000km ago, and was told that it needs to be replaced again.

Found a significant amount of oil dripping from underneath the car this weekend. Was quite concerned until they told me this morning that it is a warranty claim (BMW parts luckily carry a two year warranty...thank God for small miracles!) and will thus be replaced FOC.

Is this a common occurence on our cars, and has someone had similar experienced with this type of problem?

My best,

Rudi

Common- Had my right side done at 49,800 FOC.

Many reports scattered about - I actually think many folks won't have it fixed once they are paying the freight, unless it gets real bad.

Hello Adam,

When you say right side I presume you mean the passenger side on your LHD model? Mine is on the same side.

Oil leakage drove me to have it fixed ASAP. As you may know I am one of the lucky few who owns a beast with zero oil consumption between service intervals and I had to top up almost a litre about a week ago. Found it rather strange given the car's good oil consumption but glad it turned out to be a seal and not a more serious fault.

Keep well,

Rudi

Hey Rudi-

I was going to write "passenger side" but then used the 'world view appropropriate' descriptor!

Mine was more of a 'seepage' ( a loaded word for some dealers/members...) but my warranty was due to expire in a few miles. I can recall 15 or 20 posts about valve cover leakages, so I figured I would press to get it fixed.

Funny I had EXACTLY the same experience. Warranty was just about out and thought I had to take care of this "seepage". Took them two attempts at the time to get it fixed, now will be the third time. Guess I'm glad I had it done in time.

Best...

Rudi

Most cars which have valves will need valve cover gaskets at one time or another. This is totally normal. I did mine recently while replacing the plugs. It's a fairly involved process Both sides should be done at the same time of course.

Update

Well here's the update to my situation. Upon closer inspection the dealership found that it was in fact the VANOS o-rings that developed a serious leak. I had a look at the o-rings and it appears to me that they have been installed incorrectly, as there are "flat spots" where it was "squashed". This was confirmed by the service manager.

Thankfully the dealership agreed to pay for the repairs, which mostly consist of labour. The o-rings are about a dollar each. My car is out of motorplan (warranty).

Interesing though is that the service manager said that this occurrence has happened in the past, and he knows of instanced at other dealerships where the whole VANOS unit has been replaced unnecessarily on S62's. Now that makes me wonder to how many of you this has happened too?

In conclusion it has shown once more that it pays to have a good relationship with your SA and SM.

Rudi
