New purchase: opinions please!

Long time Bmw owner/fan.

Just bought a 2003 Bmw M5, w/stage 1 dinan, 9000 miles.
Pampered, 1 year left on maintainance/warranty.
Jet black..perfect.
Dream car to date!
Paid 50K. Good Deal? What do you think??
Should I buy the BMW maintainance or warranty extension?
Any hints for a new M5 owner?
Other than enjoy and be careful!
Thanks!!

$50k for a 2003 with only 9000 miles?!

Seems like a great deal considering the mileage and the Dinan gear, but too bad it's not a CPO.

There is NO "BMW" warranty extension!

You may think you are buying a "BMW warranty" if you buy it from a BMW dealer, but they are selling aftermarket third party warranties. Trick would have been to wrangle a CPO/warranty from the dealer when you purchased it (even if it was a private party sale, they can sometimes do it).

Even with the very mild stage 1, some extended warranties will use that to deny any coverage. (And before anyone says that the Moss Magnussen act prohibits this- an 'extended warranty' is not subject to this restriction.)

50k is on the high side for an 03, but 9k miles demands a premium. (Given the low miles and the Dinan upgrade, the price seems good.)

I wouldn't own this car without a warranty... but I also pass on the maintenance agreements- not a fan of dealer maintenance.

Congrats- and welcome!

A

I don't know if you mean Dinan S or S1 package but that sounds very good for a 9k car, but the warranty part is a detraction. Nice car to be sure.

Yeah, great deal on the car! Normally I am in Boston, but I do own a home in Saratoga Springs. I am there quite often... couple time a month usually. Shoot me a PM, and maybe we can meet up.

Sounds like a good deal, assuming condition matches mileage.

Have fun with your car. Welcome to the Board.

Welcome!

I think you got a great deal. The only bug in the ointment is that the warranty will soon expire. I would look into an extension; unfortunately, this can not be done by BMW. The BMW extensions can only be bought by the original owner or by virtue of the CPO process.

You might want to do a search...my understanding is that some decent warranties are available for about $3K (2-3 years of coverage after the original warranty).

You CAN buy the maintenance extension from BMW, which covers oil changes, clutch (unless "abused"), brakes etc. I personally did this, as I wanted the fullest "protection" available (warranty + maintenance), although its value can be disputed.

Enjoy your car!

Yes you got a good deal. It would depend how much the warranty is and what it will cover? If this is going to be your daily driver, you may want to really consider it.
