I was pulled over on 280N today. I was being tailgated by a SUV of all things and I accelerated to get. Acceleration in a 996TT meant I was going triple digits in a blink. CHP officer pulls me over, is courteous and polite. Hand him my license, registration and insurance. He comes back with an 85 in a 65 ticket.
He asks me if I'm current with the 11-99 foundation--I tell him I'm a lifetime member. He says 2 things--1) he is very glad that I didn't bring it up when I handed him my papers and 2) that he was very appreciative of the support and that it means a lot to the CHP. Point 2 notwithstanding, I think had I not done what I did on point 1), it would have been a triple digit ticket.
Key lesson--don't name drop 11-99! They can see it on your plate and they don't want people using it as a 'get out of jail free' card.

Some time ago, the Foundation sent out a letter admonishing members that their membership entitles them to "nothing more than the overwhelming good feelings of your generosity." This came about because a few individuals either represented themselves as retired CHP officers or demanded special treatment during a traffic stop. They also stated:
“You may proudly display your license frame and your membership credentials to all, for the right reasons, but do not expect, request nor demand preferential treatment. This type of behavior can seriously set back all the good that we work so hard to accomplish … and in all such instances will result in the termination of your membership in the 11-99 Foundation.”
The Foundation is great organization and its to bad that in the past a few individuals have abused the privilege of membership.
Any preferential treatment by a law enforcement officer because of a 'payoff' to their favorite cause is corruption pure and simple. Think about it - do you really want to support a system where the penalty you recieve under law depends on how much money you've given to certain people?
Sorry, but if California cops are handing out more lenient penalties to people who pay money into an organization that benefits cops, that is wrong.

Mike, that is precisely the point with MKRocks. The plate cover only signifies the donation and consideration for the CHP, but does not confer any special privileges. People used to attempt to abuse this by fabricating fake plate covers, but the truth is, lifetime members receive a metal card for the wallet, a plaque for the wall, and a plate cover. I work with CHP daily and they never give special treatment, but they are appreciative of the consideration. Having saved the lives of 3 officers struck by drunk motorists in the line of duty, and having had to talk with distraught wives and children, I am proud to be a contributor.
Just wondering how much you need to donate to get a plate with 11-99 on it. Would be better than my peter pan license plate. Seems like a good cause.
$1500 is still the lifetime donation. You need to be referred by an existing contributor or an officer to donate. They may have relaxed that requirement though. Yes, it is a very good cause.
I dont think NY State has anything, but you can call your local police and find out if they do any fund raising. I bet they do- they will often give you a sticker or other display emblem for a donation. The same rules as above apply. This is really good advice in general, don't be pushy about things like this.
