Finally, the Z8 is not too bad as a drag machine...

Thanks guys.

I suspect a Z8 with a few thousand miles on it would have done much better in the slalom.

Ice M, you should do the Z8 driving experience- It was amazing and youll have the chance to drive someone else's Z8s as hard as youd like to :D

MEnthusiast: Wow thanks... at least I got a GREAT comparison of the beast doing 1/4 with other cars out of asking hehe :D

SSMOKEM: Hummm I didnt know that by dividing the 1/4 mile ET by 1.54, and subtract 20 from the mph u get a good esitmate.

Hummm I ask becuase if you noticed in another post reciently there was a 1/8 drag race at Qualcomm stadium and I saw that a lot of the cars there did upper 8 secs... So I wanted to compare... Uh o... from these number does that mean the beast wouldnt really kick butt?

Upper 8s is very respectable, but the M5 is much better suited for 1/4 mile than 1/8 mile.

In the 1/8 mile, there is a much higher premium on an excellent take off and higher gearing, where the 1/4 will be somewhat more forgiving, especially if you can pull hard at the top, like the M5.

Very nice work..a little disapointed with M-5 test comparing to M-3..

keep in mind there was no category for luxury, comfort or storage. If those were in there I think the M5 would fare quite well. Remember the M5 is supposed to be the ultimate sedan for the enthusiast driver. The M3 is supposed to be the ultimate sports coupe for the enthusiast driver. Then you have cars like the 911 turbo and Ferraris and a little ol' convertible they call the Z8

My times...

Here are the times from my first ever 1/4 mile run:

Reaction..... Withheld to protect the innocent
60 ft........ 2.064
330 ft....... 5.805
594 ft....... 8.296
1/8 ET ...... 8.850
1/8 MPH ..... 81.22
1000 ft ..... 11.389
1/4 ET ...... 13.595
1/4 MPH ..... 102.75

I did, however, beat the car next to me (2000 or 2001 Trans AM [not a WS-6]). I gave up ~0.442 at the start but still beat him to the finish.

I dumped the clutch at ~1500 RPM and mashed the gas. I did get some wheel spin and then some wheel hop. I was running 39 psi at the rear (cold) and after the run I measured 41 psi.

That's an excellent 60' time, considering the manual tranny, street tires and road racing type suspension. From looking at your slip, I gather that the M5's torque range is higher up the rpm scale than most stock cars.

What does an M5 weigh?

It's just too bad that great handling and quick take-offs are not mutually compatible :( I wouldn't mind getting better handling out of my car, but at this point I'm not willing to give up my 60' times.

Those Road & Track times are no good...

Those times from Road and Track do not include
any times for the 2001 M5, which is faster than the
2000 model. Also, those times are taken from different
tests in different conditions and are not always directly
comparable. For example, in real life, the new M3 beats the M5
to 60 by a tenth of a second, if that. In the quarter mile,
the M5 eclipses the new M3 by more than that. The
M3 is at least 10 m.p.h. slower in top speed too.
The M5 also beats the new M3 on tracks like Hockenheim
and Nurburgring and BMW knows it. So the M5 is
not so bad.
