Sub Question

Has anyone here mounted aftermarket subs under the rear deck firing into the passenger compartment, and made an enclosure for them? I'm thinking about doing this, but am worried about getting a tight seal around the sub opening.

One of our sponsors, Bravarian Soundwerks, has some packages that several people have installed and been very pleased with. There have been some recent threads about them and the installs.

I mounted a pair of 10" subs and an amp under the rear deck firing into the passenger compartment a couple years ago. Here's a thread where I describe the installation along with pictures:
M5 Subwoofer Installation

I had DSP but not M-audio in my '00, but it would work just as well with M-audio cars. One of my posts in the thread describes what wires to tap into for the signals.

I wouldn't call my setup an enclosure, although I suppose it could be considered a very small enclosure with large ports. Really it's an infinite baffle (free air) setup. This makes the best use of space and has good frequency response and accuracy, but won't get quite as loud as a system with an optimal enclosure could. It's plenty loud enough though, the rest of the stock system can't quite keep up with it as it is (starts distorting before the subs do even with it equalized a bit bass heavy).

It's sealed quite well to the rear deck, and plenty of Dynomat was used to tame vibrations. Some air could leak around the fold down seats even when they are up, but I have not found that to be a problem. It takes some doing to get rid of vibrations and rattles, but it's possible. The rear sunshade is the trickiest part. If I want to play it real loud I just put the sunshade up and the problem goes away. Someone suggested using electrical tape where the sunshade rests to stop those vibrations, but I haven't tried it yet.

If you search you'll find other threads where people have done similar things and discussed eliminating vibrations, etc. Definitely a worthwhile mod.

Very nice

DaveK -- Great setup. Are those JL Audio 8" infinite baffle subs? Where did you find them?

Thanks. You're close, they're JL Audio 10" infinite baffle subs, model 10IB4. 8" would be a bit small, and it may be tough to fit anything over 10" under there although you might be able to squeeze a pair of 12"s in if you don't put the amp in between. I bought them years ago from a local shop and installed them in my previous car before reinstalling them in the M5. Unfortunately JL Audio discontinued those and apparently the only IB sub they make anymore is the M10IB5-4 for marine applications (which may be a good choice, but I'm not sure). You may be able to find 10IB4s used, but be careful, they could have been abused. Someone must make good IB subs these days, but since I haven't been in the market for them I wouldn't know who.
