Rear Parking Sensors gone mad!

I've searched loads on this but can find no previous reference.....

On Saturday I started the car in the morning, put it in reverse and the most god-awful noise came from behind me. It sounded like the parking beeper but was much higher pitched, louder and on constantly rather than beeping. I took it out of reverse and the noise stopped. The same thing happened 3 more times that day but has been fine since. At one point the beaper stopped all together (nearly took the front off a Hyundai - oops!) but did start working again shortly afterwards. The electrics in these cars are certainly quirky!

Has anyone else experienced this?!

My back one's sometimes go nuts in the snow--I think the slush and stuff must have splashed up on them so when I put it in reverse, they think something is back there. I think I remember every rare once in a while the front or rears just beeping once or twice for no apparent reason also.

Maybe BMW needs to invent PDC sensor washers too

I wish I knew LOL I'll have to add that question to my "trivia for my SA list".

I forgot to add that my front sensors will sound when I exit a parking lot of something with steep pavement after I've just backed up- the front of the car is that close to the pavement because of the sharp angle.

Of course yesterday, the front sensor did one spontanious beep just to torture me

OK I finally asked my SA about this last week and I hope I'm remembering it right

What he said is most likely there is something on the lens, a bug or bit of dirt for example, that might not even be that visisble, and that you should clean the lens with glass cleaner and that usually helps. He said when they do fail then tend to do so in a more dramatic way, like continuous beeping.

Hope this helps! Now get out there and clean those poor things!

I just had my car in for an alignment, and brought up the PDC on my car. Mine doesn't work anymore. They quoted me about $400 to replace two sensors.

Wow, you've got to be kidding! The sensors are around US$70 each from Crevier BMW (online). This is an easy DIY job if one is comfortable removing the black trim that is around the bumper. It's just disconnect old sensor and reconnect new sensor, put back the trim. You may want to spend $1 or $2 and buy some extra trim clips in case any of them break (they are not very strong). Including shipping and tax, you should easily save yourself $200+.

Are you sure that both sensors are bad? It may be just one. Park the car in quiet place, turn key to ON, press PDC button. Then walk to each of the sensors, put your ears directly next to them. Working sensors will click noticeably. The bad ones will be silent. Replace only the silent ones.
