i like it. although i know very little about this issue it made me want to find out more and look into it deeper. i think that is the intent of the letter and since it is well written by a phd they should at least look into it. i would be more than happy to sign it or any other petition that may need to go to bmw.
This represents (in my opinion) a well thought out and well written letter. It might be beneficial to have an electronic document circulate that we can digitally sign as a group to attach with this.

Just curious: you mention similar problems in the M62TU. I've posted about the carbon issue on a couple of E39 boards that have a significant percentage of V8 owners and no one seems to have heard of it, in fact, several of them have mentioned that in engines they've had open for other reasons the SAI plumbing has been clean. Even the professional wrenches that post frequently say that they've never seen it in a M62. Where have you seen the problem, or even reports of the problem, in the M62?

[Thanks for the comments...keep 'em coming!]
Interesting question. The reference to the m62 came right from the bmw service bulletin. Perhaps because these engines share the same SAI design, it was assumed by bmw that carbon faults would be occuring at similar rates. My local dealer confirmed to me that they have performed carbon jobs on 7 series and X5s. Perhaps the absolute incidence is lower? Perhaps the proportion of owners of these models that regularly participate on message boards is lower? Maybe bmwna has been effective dispensing goodwill? Maybe some combo of the above?
I'm not shocked that clean SAI systems have been observed in some engines upon tear down. On the m5 side, we still don't know why one guy sees carbon blockage at 9k mi, while others go 100k mi without a fault. Feelin' lucky??
