Wheel Repair Shop around Chicago Area?

Just got the beast back from service yesterday and had the following done under warranty:

1. perform service 1
2. replace two leaking power steering hoses
3. break fluid flush
4. windshield wiper blades
5. removed the clip from the driver's seat so that it can be used for its full travel.

on a side note, what's dissapointing is that i have been taking 2 cars to Laurle BMW for over two years now and i purchased a vehicle from them and they still HAD to charge me a half hour labor to program this car. It is not about the money but about the fact that it made me feel like my business was not appreciated....

also another curious thing is that two dealerships now told me that i need front tires. I measured the thread depth yesterday (using the correct tool) and both came back at 6/32nd's. Now last time i checked that was definitely w/in speck. dang replacement happy dealers....

on to the real reason for the thread: They say that the two front rims are bent on the inside (which is what is causing the shake in the steering). They also said they would charge me about $250 a piece to get them fixed. I have heard of places (whells america?) that fix rims for as little as $130 or so. Does anyone in this area have experience fixing rims? if yes, where and how much. thanks.

Two years ago after my 3.45 diff was installed i suddenly had wheel shimmy at 60 mph and found a bent left front rim, a bubbled left front tire (brand new and ruined), and a bent left rear rim. Basically somebody had an abusive joy ride, though i had no way to prove it- I had not hit any potholes, for sure..

I took my wheels over to wheels america in ?schaumburg, they charged 130$ and did a fine job. If you want the wheels repainted its a fair bit more, the hyper paint is apparently expensive.

Since then, no problmes, the wheels have worked perfect! Takes a few days though so you need to have your winter tires on or something...

ok, so i called wheels america today and they charge $130 for the refinising and fixing the bent rims. however, they also charge $18 for taking the tires off and mounting them back on plus tax. talked to $tealer and they charge $200 even per rim and they give me a loaner while i do that. since i have to take the car in to get something else done on the steering (i cant believe these idiots did not fix this the first time considering i told them to look at it) i think i may just pay the extra $50 per rim and not have to worry about keeping my car on bricks while they fix the rims... u guys got any ideas?

Just to reiterate what I said in a previous post... I faced the same situation with one of my front tires/wheels. Was told by Knauz that the rim was bent and the tire could not be balanced. I had reason to doubt this and took it to an indy and got the tire re-balanced. Now she rides smooth at all speeds.
It may be true that your rims are not perfect. Guess the question is are they bad enough to require fixing. Might take it to an indy and risk 30 bucks if they think they can re-balance. Unless you're planning some 180 mph runs, I'd try and get the most out of the tires you have before dumping them.

Dave, thanks for replying. I stopped by JustTires today and they also told me that my front tires need to be replaced. I asked "why" to both JusTires and the dealer today and both told me that it is not because i dont have enough thread but because both front tires have dry rot and very visible cracks. i am not sure how big of a problem having dry rot and cracks on the tires are but i have had two dealers and "JustTires" tell me that i need new tires. not sure if that is enough.

I am posting pics of each tire and if you guys tell me to keep the tires i will try to have them rebalance the wheels. if you tell me i need new tires, i will order to new tires and have them try to balance the new tires and wheels. if that does not help, i will have the wheels repaired.

also, i do not plan on doing 180 mph runs since to the best of my knowledge i sitll have the limter, however, i am planning and know that i will be doing 120-150 mph runs. if that changes your answer on weather or not to repair the rims, please let me know. thanks again for sharing your experience.

Your tires look exactly like mine. Same dry rot evident. I think it depends on what you are planning to do. If you are serious about stressing the tires with high speed or track, I'd definitely get new ones. If, like me, you are mostly loafing around the burbs, you can probably defer replacement until you are ready to rumble.

If you decide to replace all of them, have some fun with some smokey burnouts first!!

Sounds like me.. took mine for a sustained 120+ mph cruise two weeks ago. Wasn't worried about the tires, though perhaps I should have been. If I were planning to take her up to the speed limiter, I would surely think more about them. Conservatively, if we are talking about high speeds on tires that are exibiting signs of integrity breakdown, it is probably not wise. I'll probably hold off on any further 100+ forays until I replace mine.
