PAC sells a unit which can save your steering wheel controls. I did it on my ZHP and was able to retain using the skip forward, skip revers, volume up and vlume down functions. the fast forward and fast reverse were gone however. you have to splice one wire on the ZHP and that is actually the only wire i had to splice on that car. i am assuming that same unit will work for the e39. Since i no longer need that i will check to see if it will work and let you know and if interested i can ship it to you for a reasonable price. i also had a alpine head unit so i know it is compatible with Alpine.

PAC is a company that makes electronics for cars. they generally make line level converters etc. the one i used for the zhp is called SWI-X which is specifically made to be used with the steering wheel controls. i did not use any shops in chicago, did all of the work myself. attached is a picture of what the swix looks like. at the end of the black cable there is an IR eye and and on the other end are cables for the power etc. if you are in the city somwhere feel free to call me to discuss and or even meet. i think this thing retails at around $70 but i would let it go for a lot less so long as it works in your vehicle. i would also be happy to help you install it.

ACTUALLY I JUST CHECKED AND IT WILL NOT WORK WITH 5 SERIES W/NAV 2002-2003. HOWEVER THERE IS NO MENTION OF THE 2000 YEAR MODEL. CALL THEM AND FIND OUT.

here is their website and you can read more about their products. they look cheap but work ok. it looks like they now have several different types of SWI (Steering Wheel Interface) controllers.

http://www.pac-audio.com/default.asp

looks like they have now a swi-alp specifically designed to work with the following alpine units: Current 2005 radios from Alpine that are Steering Remote Control Ready: CDA-9851, CDA-9853, CDA-9855, DVA-9965, DVA-9860. Also works on CDA-D853, CDA-D855, CDA-D857 DIN 1/2 stereos.
