Only 10k miles out of rear PS2s?

Last August at 35k miles, I replaced my rear PS2s. They had about 10k miles on them, probably a little less, and they were really shot. Now, 5k miles later, the rears look like they're at least half done. The fronts have plenty of tread and look like they could go another 10k miles.

Note, the rears (and fronts) are wearing evenly, and these tires do not see track time. I've never done a "burn out" with the car and don't drag race -- just healthy doses of spirited driving.

Any similiar experiences? I'm wondering whether cold weather driving is making the rears wear more quickly. I don't drive the car in snow, but we haven't had much snow in the NE this year, so I've driven the car over the past few months. With diminished traction in the cold weather, maybe I'm spinning the rears more than I realize? Do summer tires wear more quickly when it's cold? Any thoughts?

Hummm ... very odd, I think. My experience. New car. Stock. Dunlop 8080E tires. AIR PRESSURE (do you check yours religiously?) 38 - 41 front, 42 - 45 rear depending on the driving to be done and luggage (never more than one passenger ... wife always packs way TOO MUCH.). VERY spirited, mostly long distance, fast driving. 36,000 on the rears when I encountered a flat and wore the inside of one rear to the cords. (Was going to replace them anyway before my next trip.) Fronts still OK at 38,000 with probably 3,000 miles left.

The only two things I can think of are: Air pressure too low, and lots of weight (secondary to air pressure). Check pressure when COLD.

Pressures are good (38-39 rear, checked regularly). Not much long distance driving, which doesn't help. I generally do 15-20 mile hops with mixed highway and local roads. Thanks everyone for the feedback!

10k tire life has been my experience as well. Of course it greatly depends on your driving style and the tire type.

Hee, hee....I wish...

I wish I could get 10 thousand miles off a set of tires...

Attached is a pic of 7500 miles on my set of 275/18 x 4 (fronts) of my PS1s...I hope to get the same milage out of the new set of PS 2s....

I got 20k from my first set of PS2s. I should get the same again.
If your treadwear is even across both rears, tire pressure and alignment are good. Do you frequently accelerate hard from stops? Especially when not straight? Do you run DSC off? Even with DSC on, I gan get chirps out of either tire. Especialy when turning left onto a highway. Over time, this could dramatically shorten tire life. There's bound to be a formula. "Subtract 200 miles for each second of tire squeal". :) But add 5 seconds of grins so it may be worth it!

My personal belief is that alignment is often overlooked....

It is not enough to tell the dealer or shop to "check the alignment to BMW specs". The BMW specs allow huge cross toes that will scrub tires to death.

I got 15k from one set of rears, revised my alignment, and are halfway through another set at 20k. I drive very fast, but rarely drift/abuse the tires.... I run 41 up front, 39 in the rear, but this is 275s all around.

All due respect to Richard, I think there are alignents that can give you even wear and still be off- camber can offset toe ...

BKH had a recent post on where - within the broad spec- he should ask the alignment shop to set the measurement...check it out.

I just replaced my PS1's yesterday with PS2's from Tire Rack. At 25,000 miles, I was just starting to touch the wear bars in the rear, and the wear was even all around. I'm hoping to get the same mileage or better with the PS2's...at least I hope so, because $1,150 for four tires is a significant chunk of change. I did have the alignment done when I put on the new tires, and I really like the feeling of the new set up.

Only 10,000 sounds like very little to me, but obviously other board members don't agree.

I would check the alignment perhaps as someone stated and see what comes up. Ask your dealer for any other input.

I have about 7000 on my Dunlop 8080E's and they are close to going too. What's up with that? My Pilots on the Vette last a LOT longer.

I've got about 10k on my PS1's. They had some amount of mileage on them when I got the car, not sure how much however. I know that the new tire numbs were all worn down, that usually takes 1k miles or so.

I've probably got another 5-10k in the tires. I don't drive the card hard very frequently however, but I've had my fair share of DSC kicking in on me and squeeling the tires.

I've been running 38F/37R recently, and ran 37F/36R for a while, both cold pressures, so add 3-4PSI for warm pressures.

If you drive PS2s hard (burnouts, hard cornering, power slides, etc.) you can expect to get no more than 15K miles from a set of rears. I know...I do all the of the offending actions and I've gone through two sets of 275/35's in just under 30K miles. I'm now on my third set and need to change fronts soon.

Anything below 42 is too low for the rears (esp on a car of this weight). Also, spirited driving is harder on street tires than one would think

I would disagree with that. I run 34 - 35psi (per dinan's recommendations) and get even wear, with my rear tires lasting about a year 12-15k miles, with a few track weekends thrown in, and my fronts being decent for another 6k or so. For a performance tire like the michellin pilot (at least the original pilot sport, that i'm using) 40 hot seems to be good pressure.

Strange, I have my first set of PS2's on the rear, a little over 11k on them and they look almost brand new. I hit the curvy way home every day and do a burnout here and there. I do get an alignment every six months and religiously maintain tire pressure though.

Based on current appearence, I wouldn't be surprised to get 30k out of them.
