Troubleshooting electric adjustment of driver's seat & steering wheel?

Well, I get in the car today and neither the drivers seat or steering wheel will adjust. Checked the fuses and they are fine, even swapped them out. While looking for loose connections, I also found a switch under the steering column, just behind the wheel. When I turn it on, with the ignition on, there is a series of beeps, when I turn it off and then place the ignition on, no beeps, any idea what the hell this switch does, there is no mention of it in the owners manual, at least that I could find.

Thanks

Could be an after-market switch installed by previous owner. Possibly an ignition kill, or some type of aftermarket security system???
I used to have a similar problem with my old 540. Every once in a while the seat controls and steering wheel adjustment would not work. Had $tealer check for problem several times. Suprise, Suprise, $tealer could never find the problem! The problem would not happen that often, and I noticed it usually happened when the weather was raining/humid??? Darn Gremlins

The steering column and seat memory module is one unit in the m5 and is prone to failure. I had mine replaced twice under warranty.

Good luck.

Is the memory module part of the 4 button memory unit in the driver side door?

It is, but I do not know if it is in the door though. I was not there when they swapped it out.

Well, I fixed it. Turns out it was the drivers seat/steering wheel memory module, which, fyi costs $167 with bmwcca discount. got a 24hr subscription to the BMW TIS website and after much searching, found a service bulletin, turns out it is prone to failure, also downloaded how to remove/replace it.

Hey Rev,

Can the module be fixed or is it just a total loss? Also have you tried BMA? I am sure they carry stuff for the E39 and they have provided great service and deals for my E34

How about posting module description/part # and location for future reference? Thanks

Jerry

No problem, the memory module actually contains the switches for the seat back and seat bottom (what moves the seat back and forth, up and down, etc), its all one unit, so you have to remove the whole panel thing on the side of the seat which can be a PITA there are a couple hidden screws that must come out. Once you got it off , the switch/memory module will just pop out. The part number is 61 31 6 910 717 I still have my old one, dont know if it can be repaired or not, I would bet not.
