Having said that Robstar, then it would probably be wise for people to ask sellers on eBay to get the part number for the screen rather than the housing which I feel somehow is being done.

But how do you explain all the various part numbers I've seen for 16:9 widescreen units? You would think there would only be five part numbers and all the units being sold out there would match on of those five.

Does someone know if the screen and bezel surround are the only parts that determine the pitch angle and difference between widescreen units for an X5 or M5? I assume the housing doesn't matter since both I and Robstar have been told the frame is the same for the X5s and M5s.

Fully agreed - as LCD panels are changeable.

Seems the PNs on this item are all a bit of a mystery, even to BMW.

I've been told that the electronics inside the LCD screen are the only difference. They're programmed to work on different angles, which is why Frits is going to have a go at modifying his X5 screen to work at the E39 viewing angle.

Jeez this is all too complicated

Amen. I had no idea when I decided a nice upgrade from a 4:3 screen to a 16:9 screen would be such a detailed ordeal. For cost savings purposes you would think BMW would have created only three part numbers. The frame being one and good for all E39s and X5s out there, then a part number for E39screens and pitch angle, then one for X5s and be done with it.

Have one supplier manufacture these three parts. Apline out of Mexico for example. The rest is programming and done on a regional level around the world.

But that would be too easy right?

any updates yet Fritz? (yes, i'm anxious).

I ran a web translation of the document:

In English:
A) Monitor from the car remove: 1. Screen down 2. 4 screws around the monitor solve 3. Cables starting from
screen of the housing remove
B1. (4 screws) 2 removes upper sheet metal cover. 2 kupferfarbene cables mark (white bolting device pull up) 3 out. (folded up position) 4 pulls monitor out. 4 screws solve 5 at the carriage. The 2 Kupferfarbenen cables by the housing lead 6.

C decrease screen) screen divide 1. At the back 4 screws remove 2. Front remove 3. (2 screws) 4 unscrews photoelectric cell of the front. 5 removes front. 6 lifts complete plate from the housing. At the back the automatic controllers are one can everything really adjust: Brightness, contrast, intensity, color disalignment, red, green, blue, photoelectric cells sensitivity, and and and. For brightness contrast and intensity are responsible the left automatic controllers. The function of the 3. Automatic controller from above do not have I yet to define can. Possibly the photoelectric cell, there this also substantially more sensitively is now - on the day with full strength and at night beautifully dark. Which for a wohltat for the eyes. Rights are only plaything (red, green, blue, color disalignment, inverting (which is black, becomes white, and looks turned around somehow like black light.

D) Adjust 1. The 2 kupferfarbenen cables again sticks on 2. Bolting device for the cables secure 3. Material between plate and metal parts of the housing put, thus it to the short-circuit do not come to 4. In the car attach (see 2. Photo above) 5. Rules to fits. Examine in each case an automatic controller and a result. I have about 40 minutes adjusted to I with the result content was long again and again. And one sees the result here with radiating sunshine AND camera lightning. That it was really very bright recognizes one by the plates on the left and on the right.

I'm a little concerned about those kupferfarbenen cables!

Great job mottati. Those translation programs are funny sometimes. I have a friend in Germany who can probably translate this document for us and put it in to a little better words. If you guys want, I can e-mail him.

Or, does anyone know someone who works at a BMW dealership where they can have that employee speak to their service department and access files on repairs and adjustments to 16:9 screens? I have to imagine there's something available.

Another angle may be someone who just bought a BMW recently where the sales person might feel indebted to help out here?

I don't know, I'm just brainstorming.

A real german translation would be nice. I found the translation a bit amusing, but slightly more helpful than the german text! I'm going to go look at my tis cd and see if i can find any info (but it's an old version, from 01). I doubt we'd get any help from a dealer, but i am going to post a question and link this thread on bimmerboard.com, who are pretty nav savvy.

Now that i have my new splashscreen (thanks vancoverM) i really want the display to be sharper/brighter...

I'm installing my MKIV computer this morning. I purchased what is supposed to be an E39 screen from an eBay user named ana_cernys out of Lithuania. She's rather slow to respond and it's been a little frustrating trying to purchase the unit from her but she claims she has a 2003 screen in mint condition including the trim piece and I paid $560.00 including the shipping.

I'll keep an eye out for your thread or if you want to post it here, then we can all link over to it.

Thanks for the help.
