I just received a manual how to update the pitch angle of the screen. Haven't tried it myself, but I will try it in the weekend.

It's in German, and I don't understand a word of it, but the seller of the screen told me: open up the monitor, and turn the wheels. It's very easy...

I'll try, and keep you guys posted.

thanks for the post Fritz, i don't know if i'm that confident with my electronics skills to open up the monitor. Please take some pics if you can to guide us thru it!

So does it seem odd to anyone that there are all of these X5 monitors floating around out there!?

It looks OK in the car but now I'm rather annoyed that he's sold me the wrong one.

My wife had an 02 525iTa with nav. If i had never seen a 'correct' e39 nav, i'd probably not notice, but the screen is a little more washed out. I have a hard time seeing the time and other smaller data when there's a lot of sunlight, and if the sunroof is open, forgetaboutit...

There is definitely a difference. I have the X5 one, and it is a bit more faded as you watch it from the driver's seat. However, as you move more towards the passenger side, and look at it from a higher position, it get's crystal clear. If you sit in an X5, you will notice the angle positioning is different, it was developed with the X5 seating position in mind.

I lined up next to my friend's M5 and the difference was noticeable, both mine and his opinion. With that said, it is not all that bad, in fact, considering how bad the 4x3 was, I am very happy.

As far as all these X5 monitors floating around, well, maybe it has to do with the theft that occured at BMW Spartanburg plant (where the X5s are assembled) where a worker stole north of 600 units. That was a year ago, but maybe the residuals are still floating around. I am told (by a vendor that was asked to assist in the implication of the individual in question) that BMW NA took a position they will not investigate (nor reposses units) further.

I will have my friend look into the German directions, but I too am hesitant to open the monitor and fitz around with the circuitry...

I'll do it, and take some pics. But you'll have to wait until the weekend (the quality of the display is not THAT bad, so a few more days should be OK, right? ).

If I am not wrong, by opening up the unit as per the pix you will end up breaking the "warranty invalid" stickers and thus will invalidate any remaining warranty on the item.

I went out on eBay and looked at X5s for sale with navigation and downloaded their pics of the 16:9 screen and then did the same thing for 2001-2003 M5s and I can see how the X5 screens are tilted higher.

Now to confuse a little more and sorry to do this, however earlier in this thread Whizzkid said that a screen for an X5 is part number 65 52 6 934 413 and I contacted a seller who is selling a screen out of a 5 series and it has the same part number as this.

Wonder if somehow we could get a list of ALL part numbers for 16:9 units put in X5s from 2001-2005 and M5s from 2001-2003. Then we would know for sure. Where to get all this info will be the challenge. Not sure a BMW dealer will have all that at their fingertips but it's worth a call. I'll do it.

Oh, and for any of you curious to know what you have, it's not that hard to pop the bezel off and then remove I think it's 4 screws and the screen will come out. Then you can get the part number off the top of the box. Press the bezel up and it pops off. Instructions are posted on X5world.

I didn't buy the unit from a dealer, so I guess I don't have any warranty at all. And, I'm not really the warranty guy... I bought my car without warranty, if it breaks, I'll pay it (or sell it, if it's too expensive).

Alright. I talked to one of the BMW dealers here in town and got more information on 16:9 screens and the housing they go in.

On the E39s the screens were superseeded only once. The older screen was part number 65-52-6 913 385. The current screen is now 65-52-6 934 415.

On the X5s the screens were also superseeded only once. The older screen was part number 65-52-6 915 517. The current screen is 65-52-6 934 416.

The frame for the E39s gets a little more complicated and the guy I was talking to was rather irritated with the BMW parts computer at this point. He said the part number for cars made from SEP00 to SEP01 are part number 65-52-6 916 611. Then from SEP01 to MAR02 it is part number 65-52-6 915 518. After that the current part number is now 65-52-6 923 878.

For the X5s he said the housing is the same current part number for the E39 which again is 65-52-6 923 878. He showed no other part numbers for housing on X5s. This didn't make sense to me but I was glad he took all that time to tell me what he did.

What's still frustrating to me is the two part numbers Whizzkid listed aren't even included in the part number I got today from the dealer.

On eBay this past weekend I noted all these different part numbers for just tape player units and this could be for X5s or M5s......

65-52-6 934 413
65-52-6 915 516
65-52-6 934 415
65-52-6 913 385
65-52-6 980 246
65-52-6 913 387
65-52-6 928 389
65-52-6 923 878

Having done some more investigation myself and with the assistance of the very helpful seller on eBay, we seem to be getting somewhat confused here. I bought a unit which (I've been told and I have no reason to doubt him) came from an E39. The main housing unit is 65.52-6 934 413 and the LCD PN is 65.52-6 913 385. So, to check if you've got the right one, flip up the LCD and check the PN on the back of that because the PN of the main unit can be the same for an X5 or an E39. The LCD for an E39 should be 65.52-6 913 385 or 65.52-6 934 415. For an X5 it's 65.52-6 915 517 or 65.52-6 934 416.
