Battery problems! Trickle charger recommendations?

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I have posted so many apologies there.

My M5 is only used once a fortnight (what a crime) and as a consequence my battery keeps going flat. I have had BMW emergency services out twice now. The last technician said a new battery is required which under my warranty I will be getting a new one next weekend.

I have been advised to leave the battery on a trickle charger whilst the car is not in use, does anyone else do this and if so any particular model of charger to purchase?

this is the one for you!

I have three of these permanently working in the garage and they are brilliant. The basic 800 model is fine, but make sure you order the cigar lighter attachment for ease of use otherwise you are constantly connecting up under the bonnet, or worse in the boot.
Good luck!

BMW Advanced Battery Charging System

I had similar problems during the winter, when the beast is hibernating. And, after leaving my radar detector plugged in in the garage for 2 weeks and killing my battery, I went out and bought the BMW Advanced Battery Charging System. With a CCA discount, it cost me around $60 plus tax.

It works well. I think it is OEMed by Battery Tender . . .

Thanks Guys,

Will look into getting one of these this week, I have not had a car before that wasnt a daily driver so am not used to the pitfalls of storing cars for long periods without use.

If you decide on the BMW trickle charger, I would recommend the Mini trickle charger instead ... same identical unit, but the Mini charger has alligator clips and the BMW charger has a cig lighter insert.

My vote is for Battery Tender which if memory serves also makes the unit sold through your friendly BMW dealer.

VW has an inexpensive solar charger that plugs into the cig lighter. On ebay. Around $15-$20 last time I checked.

Jerry
