Options for purchasing MAFs?

Being a new member, I am just finding my way around the site and have already found interesting discussions about MAF failures!

On a few recent trips I have experienced the classic MAF failure symptoms.
Limp mode has occured on two recent journeys when reaching the rev limit when changing gear from 4 th to 5th !

Luckily on both occasions I was able to free wheel into a service station at the road side , restart the engine and everything is fine again. The car is running fine after intitial warm up ( which is a bit jerky for first 1/2 mile) but when warm pretty smooth but i'm guessing down on power.

from all the threads I notice that everybody steers clear from purchasing directly from BMW.

To help me avoid filtering through every thread on this site , can somebody advise if:-

I should purchase the entire unit or just the sensor?
What is the part numbers for each option
Who / where is the best place to buy them UK or US
Are any of the bulk buy MAFs still available

I'm about to book the car in for an inspection 2 service, and will want to get the MAFs changed at the same time. If I can source them myself , Im sure I will save a small fortune!

Thanks for all your Help,

Fumesy

Mafs

there are two routes

ebay : look for MAFS for 2000L vw from Martens Washington
67 dollars

or use the group buys for these @ $115

these work just fine

or for the UK BMW anal retentive
£250 per unit cost
its your choice

Change the plugs too, the lean mix over time, from the bad MAF's...has probably trashed them. Wise to do so.

Have all of the issues with the VW MAF's been ironed out? I like the idea of $59 MAF's but want to sure they work correctly.

found no difference

TISI

I found no difference
my mafs were fairly new so I thought useful to do a back to back

no real difference on the bum/butt dyno :
they worked just fine for me
so they are my backup set

Sumo 69 is going to try them in his as well as another test

The so-called issue was a highly modified vehicle having re-adjustement issues when switching to new MAF sensors..they just happened to be the VW ones, is all.

The thing you DON'T hear about, is the few dozen M5 owners who have had fantastic results. As usual, the folks with issues post but the ones without, don't. A common human situation in any arena.

The sensors are identical.

Right On! Thats what I needed to hear. Ordering up a pair today - even if I don't need them now it's not a bad thing to have them at the ready. At $59 each I can't go too wrong.

EDIT - Just ordered, I'll let everyone know how it goes once I recieve them.
