OBD-II troubleshoot help

SO my code reader finally arrives today I go to plug it in to find out what is causing my intermitant SES light. Go to plug it in and BAM nothing all i get is a "link error."

I have checked or cleaned:
plug on the reader
Port itself
checked conection

Assuming this might be an RTFM problem, so after looking there the only thing I have not ruled out is the fuse or ground on the port, since A.) I dont know where the port fuses (manual says the are diff.) B.) I dont have a voltmeter to check the ground.

Going to check unit on another car soon.

Absinthe,

Which code reader did you get? Is it the Peake Research Tool?

If so, a couple of things you can do:
1) As the manual says, reverse the order of the setup (turn key first, then connect cable etc)
2) Try 'power cycling' the tool - by turning key to position 2 and back to position 0 and repeat, while the tool is connected
3) Try reading the codes while the key is in position 2 (right before the start position)

I had a similar issue with the Peake and doing the above seemed to resolve it.

Of course, if your's is not the Peake, then the above may or may not apply.

With most OBD-II code readers and most cars you need the key to be in position 2.

As suggested by WraithCar cykling from pos 2 to pos 0 and back often helps.

There are different protocols used on different cars. All European cars use the ISO protocol, whearas most US cars use another protocol, and most Japanese cars a third protocol.

Check in the manual that the code reader you bought does support the "ISO" protocol.

Some readers support all the protocols, but just plain dont work with BMWs. Actron brand readers are notorious for this....

The laptop based OBD tools from www.obd-2.com work great with BMWs.

For a BMW you want their "ISO" model ($122).

Perhaps you can return the one you have claiming it does not meet the appliccable standards as it does not operate with your BMW, and your BMW has passed DOT certification and therefor definitely meets all applicable standards.

Yeah I spoke with their tech support extensively so far they have been good so we'll see how this works out.

had a problem with the Actron tool also

I had the same issue with the Actron I bought. Would only intermittently make a connection. Very frustrating. I thought there was something I was doing wrong until someone enlightened me also. All other cars I have tried it on, it works fine however.

I ended up keeping it for the wife's car, and bought a Peake tool for the bimmers. Peake works perfectly.
