Just got some more of the carbon parts construction pics.
Their doing some very good quality work.
Should have it all finished in the next week or two.
Carbon porn, that's what it's like for this fella...
Enjoy...

The roof's weight was just over 2kg (4.4lb)

The carbon parts look really good, and the weight is well real light! 2kg for the whole roof is really good, the center of gravity should be quite low and make for good handling considering there is not too much weigt at all over the "waist line" and considering the parts used elsewhere. Cant wait to see the finished ute!

The rear lid is very light as well, the guys at LSM think it could be about 10-12kg (22-25lb) when finished.
This will be a God send as it's alloy version that was orginally made was a good lift for two people and probably 40+kg.
The roll center of the Ute will be much lower then OEM for sure and I'll be interested in seeing how/if we can take advantage of the this in the final suspension tuning.
The roofs weight is well down, the total size of glass is well down (no sun roof a big help up high) and two less of the very heavy rear doors.
We did add bit of steel for the stiffness in the rear tray for the sub floor, but it's very low and sits about knee high.

One question is of course how the weight will be divided between front and rear when all is ready, but otherwise the lower the weight is located the better (of course with less being better as well). And considering the changes it should be substantially lighter than the sedan was.

Good question on the balance of the utes percentages.
The normal M5 is very close to 50/50.
I know we've basically got the same front half of an M5, from the side mirrors back it's a bit different.
My take is that we could see the same total weight, but I would bet on 50-100kg less then OEM.
Then lenghtening of the Ute will probably take a few % away from the rear and turn it more like 53/47 this won't help the ideal balance of the M5, but I wonder how much better the handling will be with a lower roll center and less total weight....loose out in one area and gain in the other???

Another thing I thought of the seats will be much lighter by about 30-40kg right there.

I look forward to seeing it's final fighting weight.

Given proper fine tuning of suspension, the difference between say 50-50 to 53-47 should be minimal, but the difference of say having the same weight with a 20cm lower center of gravity is quite big. Not too long until the car is finished though and then of course theory and practice meet.

The carbon parts GTR hoor and the one off roof and rear lid are just about done.
We went with mixing some black in with the clear coats for a few layers to take away the grey in raw carbon.
As you can see it's pretty much black in most occasions, but the carbon is visually deeper looking.

X pipe is just about on with the high flow cats.

Shane made a trip to Sydney (7 hours each way, there and back non stop drive...crazy) to pick up the glass for the sails and the rear window glass as well.
He was worried about fitment, but he's very happy.
He's also fitting new front glass as well
