"BRAKE" light, and check brake linings message on

This morning , the 2 said lights came on. A few questions: How long is it safe to go on the pads? Also, how involved is it to change my own brakes? Some people have said that you do not need new discs every pad change, and that changing the dics every other time is ok. Others state that you must cange the discs every time. Lastly, can anyone recommend a place to buy AXXIS pads, or a place to have the pads changed out near Manhattan Beach, California?

Thanks, Hector

I would first inspect the brake linings (as the msg suggests) before replacing my pads, it is quite possible it was disconnected or simply gone bad. However, if you also have the Brake warning light on, maybe pads are due to a replacement.

As far as brake products (pads or anything else), go with our Board sponsor Dave Zeckhausen.

Not sure of your (or the prior owner's) driving style, but as a general statement you do NOT need to replace your rotors every tome you change pads. More like once every other pad, or even better, depends how much abuse you put on them (choice of pad, tracking, aggressive driving, etc.)

While you are at it, might want to replace the brake fluid and add StopTech stainless steel brake lines for a firmer pedal feel. Good luck
