do they fit the stock rear wheel? got a great deal on some bfg comp ta's...

also is 255/35/ZR18 a good size for the fronts?

thanks for any help on this... still a noob when it comes to the beast...

Sorry but its not going to work. I had to have custom offsets to fit 295 19's.

Im not sure on the 255's though. I believe that the rim widths are maxed out already for tires.

we have the 255s up front at the moment and they fit great and improved handling a lot. what is the wheel width in the rear?

For get the offset 295 is just to big and out of spec for a 9.5" wide wheel. In spec would be 265-275-285 at max for that wheel. The new M5 runs a 285 on a 9.5" wheel but 275 is dead on for that size. So if you are looking to squeeze more 285 would be the max without going up to a 10".

My feeble understanding of it is there is a sidewall issue as well. the 265 being stiffer on that stock rim, and the 285 being softer. True?

I run 255/40/18 front and 285/35/18 rear - Michelin Pilot Sport on original M5 wheels. Rear tires did touched arches a bit (it took 30 min BMW mechanic to fix it with rubber hummer) and front tires do touches shock absorbers a bit when turning wheel till the end. I guess spacer would solve front tires problem but putting 295 on original wheels will get you in trouble

Sidewall stiffness is really all about what kind of tire you have not the size of the width. Now if you have less side wall say for example you have a 245 width on a 40 series tire on that 245 you have more sidewall than say a 245 35 series tire, so the smaller sidewall will be a bit stiffer to protect the wheel.

thanks for all the answers. can someone explain why 295s don't work on a 9.5 inch wide bmw wheel and 315s work on a 9 inch wide mustang wheel? just a bit confused here. I've only modded mustangs until now and have no clue about the M5 yet... have a lot to learn. thanks a million for your help.

Not sure about the modern mustang but on the older 1988-1991 models they came stock with 225/60/15. I had gone up to 235/55/15 without issue. The more modern ones had gone up rim size to 16's. But I would be extremely supprised to see something as wide as 315's on anything smaller than a 20" inch rim. The Stock E39 has 18's. It's simply not possible to squeeze that much tire on a 9.5 width rim without over pinching the sidewall and creating major clearance issues.
