Are you talking about the contact patch now? Because that is very true they do very with each company's tire design.
Yeah, I'm talking about contact patch vs sidewall design and how the whole thing/package plays out with a given tire model and the manufacturing company.
I would like to think that the bead or contact area and sizing for the actual Rim/wheel mounting points for the given tires are exact and correct across all brands..but I'm not stupid enough to presume such things, or, take it on faith. The least that such could do, is cost me a very expensive set of tires..and possbly rims from a potential blowout..and costs that could be as high as my life and that of others.
Puttering around town..who cares. Pulling over half a 'g' on a long bumpy sweeper of a corner..at 130-140 mph..is a different thing. One can do things like put potentially dangerous tire/wheel combinations on a given vehicle because they feel they will never drive the car fast or powerfully..then find themselves inadverdently 'having a bit of fun' on the highway, a year down the road.
Forgetting all about the fact that the original choices - that were suspect in the first place. We are all pulled/lulled into this sort of forgetfullness, far too easily. Best to do it right from the get-go.

Your right on, contact patch from tire to tire in any given size does vary greatly as much as an 1" of acual contact. But that doesn't really affect weather or not a 295 will fit a given will wheel size in proper form.

thanks for all the answers. can someone explain why 295s don't work on a 9.5 inch wide bmw wheel and 315s work on a 9 inch wide mustang wheel? just a bit confused here. I've only modded mustangs until now and have no clue about the M5 yet... have a lot to learn. thanks a million for your help.
17x9 Mustang wheels typically wear 275/40s for best grip or 255/40s on Fox cars where things are a bit tighter.
315s on a 9in wheel are fine for straight-line use maybe but for turning corners you'll want a 17x10 or 17x10.5
And yes, a 315/35 on a 17x10.5 fits under the rear fender on an SN95/SN99 Mustang...
we have 255/35s toyo proxes T1-S up front and will be adding 285/35 proxes T1-Rs in the rear next week

on the stang I'll be running 265/35 BFG KDWs on the 8.5x18 fronts and 295/35 BFG Comp T/As on the 10x18 rears

you can get 295 on the back but you will have to use falken tyres, the falkens are slightly narrower so will fit, eg my bt had 275/30 falkens on the back and when i went to change to conti sport 2s i had rubbing problems but the same size falken was fine

Did anyone ever run Michelin Pilot Sport 285/35/18 on stock rear rims?
I have a good deal pending...
Thanks!
I used to run 285s with no rubbing issues on the stock wheels. But I don't really think it gives any performance advantage over 275s on the same width wheel.
