buying M5 and driving from Seattle to So. Cali - advice on roads needed

About to become a new member here. I'm picking up Jason's Dinan S1 M5 on Monday and driving it home. I'm a little concerned about the weather. If anyone has knowledge of this route I'd appreciate it. I'd really like to keep away from the snow if possible. Michelin PS2's+snow+400hp=bad

My research tells me that the area to be concerned about is the Southern part of Oregon or Siskiyou Pass to be more precise. That pass right now says carry chains or traction tires, patches of ice and it really hasn't snowed there recently. Weather says snow there on Friday and Saturday and maybe Sunday and I'm going to spend the night maybe at Grants Pass so I can tackle that in the morning.

As an alternate route if the 5 is just not a good idea, I've noticed the 199 out of Grant appears to be snow free and would take me over to the 101. If I did that I'd travel the 101 south all the way to LA. Curious how slow those roads are compared to the 5. Can you cruise 70 mph down to San Fran or is it lots slower in spots. I know it would be more scenic but I do need to get home in a timely manner, hoping to be home Tuesday night late.

Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if this is slightly off topic but it does involve getting this precious M5 home safely.

Any help with other others of concern that anyone knows of so I can plan ahead and have alternate routes prepared would be great as well.

I've been looking at www.tripcheck.com and its pretty good with identified road hazards and pictures of the condition of the roads daily but I still would like some real feedback from people that know the area.

Thanks for the help,

Jon

BIG CONGRATS!!!!!!

Take the safest route possible and get your new baby home in 1 piece. Sorry I can't offer route suggestions, I'm not familiar with the roads.

Don't forget to pack some CDs and your V1. ASAP make a b-line for the PCH and enjoy the drive.

Route home ...

I have lots of relatives in Seattle, and have been there many, many times ... and, always drive the M5 (ever since I got it).

I would suggest Highway 101 from Seattle to San Francisco. Then east on 580 to I-5 ... and, then home ... Depending on the weather en route, you can take more northerly routes from the coast to I-5, just play it by ear ... or eyes, if you will.

I have driven in snow in the M5 (like Idaho to LA during Christmas) and, it is doable, but made me nervous.

The trip will take longer than I-5, but the scenery will be great. I would allow two days to make it all the way ... and, you will have time left over at the end of the trip.

Be extreemly careful in the Seattle area ... lots of cops ... and, watch 580 for cops as well. I-5 has cops, but it is pretty open and they are fairly easy to spot.

Oh, yes. Use your NAV to find your way through San Francisco. I ALWAYS get lost in S.F.

Thanks for the advice. What route would you use to get from Seattle to the 101. I was thinking Grants Pass at South of Oregon to the 199 which takes you right to Crescent City. Will I get into snow trouble on this route. I guess Grants Pass can have a little snow.

Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

I think I am sold on the 101 down thru California and then 580 to 5 as I was talking to a friend that says the scenery there is just awesome.
