Behest of a fellow board member, here's my leatherz.com Z4 illuminated shift knob. (Never liked the masochistic one-piece leather OE knob/boot design ... and the original "titan" M5 knob was prone to peeling.)
The Z4 trim matches "titan" perfectly - angular design's brilliant. Rather than re-use (cut) existing boot, I replaced w/a new stock 540 boot. Andy (owner of leatherZ) did an excellent job retrofitting illumination.
I guess it's a fair question as most shift knobs don't illuminate (yes, you said illuminated knobs) :hihihi:. But LeatherZ's do have an optional illumated knobs but they light up orange. The one thing that's keeping me from getting it is the shift pattern. I like the OEM one too much to switch eventhough I'm tired of the leather knob.
ha! Felt the same as you, ordering the 6spd OE insert even before the z4 knob arrived.
I've debated on switching out, but the stripes have grown on me, plus the number/lines are "silver" (vs. "mirror" of OE) and show up better during the day. There's also an all black offering.
Illumination color (very smooth/even - no hot-spots) matches dash perfectly.

I had ordered and installed the same shift knob from leather z. My finish is slightly off. Its off enough where i could tell but most people dont see the difference. I wonder if leatherz starting using the same material as whats in the titan finish. http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=45940

baf3472, your knob is the "rounded" version common to the M5/e39i (notice the Z4 top is almost flat, w/a distinct trailing back edge). Your finish is a bright silver, as opposed to the Z4's darker.

How did you order yours from leatherz.com. I've been browsing around their site and I can't find your particular Z4 angular knob. Did you buy the knob at the dealer and then sent it to them for the illumination job or did they do everything for you??
Congratulations, it looks terrific and I want to do the same thing.
Bought both knob and shift boot from leatherZ.</tt></tt></pre>
