Total car repaint?

Has anyone ever had this done? Likely not on your M5, but other cars?
I've become quite hooked on Black exteriors (having previously owned a Jet Black E39 540i), especially after our recent Houston meet, and mine is Anthracite. I have posted the car for sale, in hopes of then hunting down a CB or JB E39 Beast, but have generated no serious interest. Anthracite is a great color, but doesn't quite give me as much of a "warm fuzzy feeling". Of course, once I'm in the driver's seat and step on the throttle, this thought passes immediately. I love everything about my car as it is otherwise in excellent condition, and will continue to add mods if I don't sell it, but I would love it even more w/ a new Black coat. Anyone ever thought about doing this, and any ideas what the cost would be? I realize that this would drop the value, but I would then plan to keep her until she is driven into the ground. Any opinions will be much appreciated.

I haven't priced re-paint with color change, but no doubt it will not be cheap. First the job, then the re-sale. If you have enough money, you can get just about anything done. Might want to visit a reputable body shop and have a chat.

Low for a color change.

To do it right you need to almost gut the car- all door jambs, trunk, under hood.... major, major job. Remove the front and rear windows...

Find someone with a black 2001, give him your car PLUS the $8-10k.

Really.

or List your car for $8k under market, sell it in a week, then buy a CB.

Me, I'd put the money into something that actually DOES something...headers, suspension, BBK.....

Borrow a black car, drive it around and try to keep it clean for a week.

Then go happily back to your car

I only buy black cars. They look great clean but when it rains I long for a grey one! If you get/paint black make sure to use the 3M tape on the front and mirrors. Oh and every little ding/chip shows much worse on blk cars

Black looks great when it's clean but what a pain to keep it though. My fiancee has a black TL and if I can keep it looking clean for 3 days its a miracle. I would say a high quality repaint is going to be 10k+ easy. Like everyone else said, trade for a black one or sell it under book value and buy your black.

Black is good for a garage queen, not a daily driver. IMO!

Yeah, I know Black is time-consuming and often difficult to maintain, having previously owned a Jet Black car. I really don't mind the work though, seeing the results after washing and detailing the car is worth the effort. I guess I'll look for new interest, entertain offers.

And, to add... it looks incredible at night!

Hey, John, how's it going?
Yeah, I've seen that thread, and I remember MZ's car from our Houston meet. Didn't get a close look at it, but those wheels are very nice. Just needs a drop and a Dinan exhaust w/ X-pipe like your's
I actually examined your car very closely, especially the front bumper after the repaint. It looked flawless, a perfect color match. This made me want a black E39 even more. I've also looked at an '02 in CB locally, totally stock, in pretty good shape, but his asking price is a little too ambitious.
I guess a repaint is out of the question, not worth the effort or cost, so hoping for a good offer on my car.
KBK, I agree that Anthracite looks awesome at night, even with overcast skies.
I appreciate everyone's opinions. If I keep the car, I'll be very happy with it. I still smile to myself every morning I walk into the garage. But I'll make the switch if the right opportunity presents itself.
