mancm5: Those costs were from Munich Legends - without labour costs.

I would have thought that the part costs would have been the same (the caliper they fitted is the same part # as the previous one) but the labour rates would be different (much less in this case) than BMW.

Pip: I first noticed a serious vibration in the car over Christmas. Not a balance-type vibration (harmonic at 1 speed only - usually quite fast) but a really violent shudder. It went away after a while (which also led me to believe that it wasn't balance related).

A few weeks later I noticed that the car was 'grabbing' at the lights - like someone not feathering the brakes as they come to a halt. When I got out the car, one of the wheels was SERIOUSLY hot; the other was cold.

What you've described could be what some people describe as "warped disks", which is not acutally warped disks but a gradual buildup of brake pad material on the disk. Quite common if the brakes have been clamped on when the disks are hot (Sitting on the brakes after hard driving...). The situation only gets worse as the "high spots" attract more pad and so on and so on.

The main difference between this and a sticking caliper is that you will only notice the above under braking (you'll get a shudder - intensity proportional to braking force). The only remedy is to replace the disks.
A sticking caliper will be obvious under normal driving conditions and will grab at the steering. It'll come and go over time but will ultimately get worse.

Not had AP brakes myself but I've heard good (if expensive) things about them.

A

M5 brakes

had exactly the same thing
siezed caliper ....

given that i got fed up with stock Brakes ...
I went down the the brig brake route : stoptechs
I bought the balance story .. so far so good no complaints

But know it seems that AP are now really competing well here on Uk prices
for a road based < with seals > 6 pot 343 mm dia kit / not 4 pot stoptechs
they are currently pushin' a nationwide retail price of £1683.80 + vat
calcs are that Stoptechs a re currently retailing nationwide @ £2100 inc vat

also PFB are offering their fast road pads whcih are halfway house between stock and a BBK

pm me if you need info

best

Thanks for that alantd. I did think that I had calipers that needed looking at as I had a similar problem with my e34 M5.
Well it is just a case of convincing the girlfriend that new calipers are more important than a new kitchen . Well it is a HEALTH AND SAFETY thing although I am sure that the girlfriend ( ) will convince me that the kitchen is a HSE thing.
