Theoretical M5 CF hoods (caution large images)

Inspired by this thread: E39 GTR vented hood now available........
I got to thinking and worked up two Pshop renderings (quick and dirty, I know) of my M5 with red and a black CF hood.

Nice PS work. I sure envy you of the Imola Red color!

But please tell me you are not seriously thinking about this mod

These bonnets already exist (not the red), out of China I believe ... usually listed on eBay

$100 or something?

Don't do it!! And I wouldn't trust the fit or finish of any "carbon fiber" hood that only cost $100.

It looks great, but I think it really hurts the weight balance as there is already too much rear grip.

Too much rear grip? The weight balance is 52 % F and 48 % R.

IF I was gonna do carbon fiber i'd do both the hood and trunk boot. AND paint them to match the car, not the red with the weave showing through, more like a Z06 or ferrari (not the F40) where you can't see the C.F. This way you save the weight off higher areas of the car balance it out as well and it still looks good and not ricey.

With that said I would not buy any carbon fiber hood for 100 or 300 thats way to cheap to be real, or remotely good quality as shown in other posts. Peices like that cost well over a grand.

Read the other thread guys. I'm not considering about some pos Chinese hood, but a quality piece made by a company in Santa Ana.

And as much as I like the idea of red the CF, I think for the M5 I'd have to paint it body color.

Btw, estimated weight savings of approximately 35lbs means the weight balance would change from 52/48 to 50.125/49.875 - essentially 50/50.

Yes, entirely too much. Why do you think so many of us want to fit 275's up front...

If you've ever road raced your car, you'd understand.

Yes I have. What your refering to is to much understeer. Fixable with an upgraded suspension. Or just plain power sliding and learning to turn the car with throttle a bit more.

All of which is compensation for imperfect balance.

Hence why the CF hood is interesting to me. Start with better weight balance and less compromise is needed to optimise handling.
