What are these tire pressure monitor

I noticed M5s doesnt have Run Flat Tires(@ least the 00-01-02s etc), so Im curious as to why they have tire pressure monitor system.

a. Where is the sensor located?

b. What do you do when you get a "TIRE DEFECT" idiot light on the dash board, w/c I had but went away later that day. I checked the tires and all seems ok!?

Anyone

The ABS sensors monitor tire rotation after the system is "set". If then compares values; if a tire goes down by a few pounds, the rotation changes enough to tell the computer to trip the light. You have to manually inspect the tires to see which one is down.

Jerry

The tire defect indicator utilizes the ABS sensors at each wheel. The sensors "look" for a difference in the speed of wheel rotation comparing one wheel to the others. When a tire loses air pressure, the circumference of the tire decreases and the speed of rotation increases thereby telling that sensor that that tire has lost pressure. So every time that you adjust the pressure in your tires, you need to reset the tire defect system.

And the reason it's there in the first place is because the car does NOT have run flat tires AND does NOT come with a spare. All you get instead is an air compressor and bag of tire sealant.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Your manual tells you how to reset the tire pressure to get rid of the tire defect warning. If you can't find it let me know--from memory all you do is set the tire pressure manually as desired then turn the ignition key to 1 or 2, then press and hold the tire pressure switch thing to the right of the steering column.

I have noted that as tires approach the end of their safe use, the tire defect light comes on more often, even if all four tires have the same air pressure.

All in all I have not found the tire pressure monitoring to be of much value.

All you need to do is recalibrate the system. Your tires are worn, causing them to rotate more (like a tire that doesn't have as much air in it), and fooling the tire defect warning system into thinking there is a problem. Adjust or verify the pressures are to your desired levels, and then calibrate the system to this level as explained in the manual. You won't get any more incorrect tire defect warnings.

I agree. I had a flat (on run flats) and no indication ... fortunately, the tires were at the end of their useful life

I believe this TIRE DEFECT light was triggered by my rotating the wheels left to right that morning before i went to work. For my PPI indicated and showed that the tires rotational direction thread was installed backwards.
Thats my guess on why it got a fluke.
So, i the future how do i recalibrate again the system after i air it up?
and how do I turn off that false alarm, im kinda confuss for the owners manual was missing when I bought it.
anyone?

After adjusting pressures and having tires mounted, etc.

Get in. Put your seatbelt on, or you won't see the message, and turn the ignition to position 1. Press the tire defect switch in until you see the message of Calibration in the OBC display over the steering wheel. Start the car and drive. It takes about 10 minutes of driving, and there is no confirmation. It will calibrate until it is successful without further notification. You shouldn't have any more false alarms, but you did have a tire defect. It was mounted improperly. Without the monitor, you may not have known about it.
