Facelift generally refers to a changing of the front end of the car; the 3-series, for instance, received a facelift for '03 which changed minor details like the shape of the lower part of the front bumper, and the way the headlights turn (On the Pre-'03s, they turn down at the side...on the '03 and up cars, they turn up on the side)...

I don't believe the M5 received any facelifts between 2000 and 2001/2002/2003 besides the revised headlights with angel eyes.

the 'facelift' refers to the headlights (halo) and the rear tail lights also changed. I think there were some minor changes to the engine in the later build part of 2001 also. (But im not to sure of what exactly)
There was a change to the steering wheels in 2001, which are a little nicer.
Different navigation module and larger screen too.

hope that helps...

The facelift happen in the UK anway in late 2000 (X reg here), the differences are mainly cosmetic: As mention you get what is refered to as Angel Eye head lamps, led CELIS tail lamps, the 3 series three spoke M steering wheel with round airbag, if nav was fitted then you got a 16:9 monitor and MKIII nav computer, late 2002 saw the DVD MKIV NAV computer.

2001 also saw the introduction of front parking sensors as an option...

Retro fitting it all is quite straight forward, I have fully facelifted my 2000.

All the best
-Steve

Oh man, i am looking to buy a 2000 M5! How did you facelifted your M5(headlights) ? where did you get the parts from? And did the headlights come as one peace or you needed custom mod to the existing? How hard was it? Thank you

I picked up the head lamps off ebay. Remember M5's are Xenon and not the Halogens seen on many lesser '5, (though they are available as options).

Xenon's have two main parts: 1 the light unit and 2 the starter (silver box on the back with a large cable from it to the bulb) this is known as a ballast or ballon.

The 99.9% of ballasts are inter-changeable between 2000 & 2001 lights. So if you find a set without them you can use the existing ones from your lights.

The only difference are the connectors, if you are handy with a soldering iron you cun cut the old ones off, buy the replacements from the stealer and solder them back on as I did. There a 4 connectors and 8 wires to buy and cost a huge 8 UKP ~ 15USD. Alternatively you can get convert leads from Hella to make it easier.

Took me around an hour and half including the soldering...

To fit the rears you need the Official Hella retrofit kit as the voltage to the LED's (CELIS) is different, so has special wiring\voltage convertors in the kit.

Drop me a PM if need any info...

thats approx 112,500 miles, which is pretty high, mine has done 53k miles by comparison.

At that mileage things are going to be getting pretty worn, and repairing the M5 ain't cheap, especially engine parts. There are few "standard" 5 parts on them so pretty much everything is "M" with an associated price. and then there is BMW labour rates

Unless it is excecptionally cheap or you know its current owner and the car well I would personally be very cautious...
