2000 m5 UPGRADE to 16:9 screen

HI
Just got my 2000 M5, can I upgrade in phases? Upgrade the nav radio to a the newer 16:9 large screen first (just for the radio function), then upgrade the DVD computer unit (for the nav function)?
I really like the large screen look...

Thanks

Re: 2000 m5 UPGRADE to 16:9 screen

the radio is actually in the trunk, the front display is meely a command control center, with the actual devices being elsewhere.

This means that the upgrade is all or nothing. well, not quite. the 4x3 screen system CAN be used with the DVD upgrade in the GPS/NAV package. This means you can buy the DVD player and nav software, and add that into your current system..but...

the 16x9 screen/cd is the real pricey bit, actually. and I do believe it comes with that DVD player for the nav component.

So it usually ends up being a one shot deal.

Yes, you can do it in stages, that is what I did. I installed the 16:9 monitor unit (still has tape player behind screen) and later changed my nav computer to the mk4 dvd system. (then later added sirius).
The widescreen monitor will work fine with the mk2 nav computer, but the screen is a bit stretched out, look at www.bimmernav.com for some pics and info.

Re: 2000 m5 UPGRADE to 16:9 screen

I have a 2000 M5 that had the 4:3 (smaller) screen. I upgraded the screen only to the 16:9 (larger) screen. I have not upgraded the computer to the MKIV. I'm still on the MKII computer. I bought my screen from bimmernav.com and am very happy. I hope this helps.

Re: 2000 m5 UPGRADE to 16:9 screen

I upgraded my MKII nav unit to the MKIV first. I just hated the MKII nav unit, because it is soooo slow. When you're in the middle of a big city (->exactly where you really need the navi), it is too slow, and 'always' recalculating. I noticed myself yelling at the system all the time. So to me, it was more important to have the MKIV unit then the 16/9 screen.
Payed 650 euros for the MKIV.

1 month later I installed the 16/9 screen. Payed 700 euros for the screen. It does make the car look a lot younger. It's like driving a new car...

Re: 2000 m5 UPGRADE to 16:9 screen

Do they make this 16:9 screen with an in dash CD/MP3 player? Can I buy any OEM 16:9 screen to fit (ebay, etc.)?

This is very exciting as this is the biggest item that dates my car.

1. No, the widescreen that will work in our cars is casette tape only

2. I'm pretty sure any e38 or e39 nav screen will work, not sure about the x5, and am pretty sure the e46 unit does NOT work.

I do think you can change the color on the 4:3, look under the settings menu.
(they're all pretty ugly though... brown? what were they thinking)
