Preparing for my first M5

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here and after much deliberation as to what car I want I have decided that an E39 M5 is the vehicle of my my boy racer dreams thats luxurious to boot. I want to make sure that I get a honey of a car - want to check with the experts here before I make a move.

1. I want a car that is still in warranty.
2. 2001 or later - sounds like the 2000's had a few VANOS issues and seems like more carbon build up issues.
3. Looking to get under 45k miles if possible or close to it.
4. Want the 16:9 navigation system

Is there anything that I forgot? If I can ask the experts, what aside from the VANOS and carbon buildup issues are the big things to look out for? What's a fair price for what I am looking for? Any advice would be HIGHLY appreciated.

Re: Preparing for my first M5

My advice, test drive a few E39 M5 cars to get a feel for them. I have driven about ten maybe, and it seems some run stronger than others, just make sure to get a good feel for the cars...look the cars over and really take your time, don't feel rushed, check the BMW service history, hold out for your favorite color combination, keep in mind the 2003 models have the DVD based navigation system (faster loading and I think maybe more detailed maps) and the audio system I think is satellite (Sirius) ready so it becomes another option or mode right there on your navigation screen...I believe if you end up with a 2001 or 2002 you can upgrade the navigation/audio computer pretty easily though. Be sure you know what options you want or don't want...split fold down rear seats, park distance, M Audio, rear sunshades, those are the main ones. I agree stay with a 2001 or newer, there are a lot of 2001 and 2002 cars going for great deals right now. Besides that, just go with your gut feelings...What colors and options are you thinking of? Good luck, you will love the car! Garrett

Re: Preparing for my first M5

Also keep in mind that you can upgrade all of the newer features (16.9, mk4, headlights, etc...) very easily. Don't let that be the limiting factor to finding your exact car. I got a 2000 CPO till next june with 38xxx miles on it for 33k. It was the exact color I wanted and had the warranty that made me sleep better (even if the cpo doesn't cover anything). You figure that same car as an 03 would probably tack on another $20k to the price. not worth it to me.

Re: Preparing for my first M5

Thanks for all the replies everyone, this is the type of information that I am looking for. I think I do need to go drive several of them and get a good feel. If I could find a 38k mile CPO for 33k I would hop on it in a second. I am leaning towards the black with the camel interior - but silver would work too. I live in AZ so a dark interior is right out. I think the camel interior is very rich looking - the whole car is downright beautiful. I was looking at brand new Infiniti M35's and 45's and everything else in that class. I just figure that for the dollars this car can't be beat easily and someone else has already taken the big depreciation hit for me! Keep your eyes open, if you see anything that looks good I'll hop on it right away.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Preparing for my first M5

Although Hawaii's not as hot as most of Arizona (peaks in the low 90's), black interior isn't a problem here IMO. I always get a decent 35% tint (the darkest allowed in HI) and use a sunshade for the windshield if parked outdoors during the day. Of course, if you prefer the camel, don't let me stop you...Good luck finding your M5!

Yes, caramel (camel) with wood is very luxurious. First car I ever bought based on interior color than exterior.

One other good source for used cars is the board right here. Check the "For Sale" section. Board members, especially those who have been around for a while, tend to take very good care of their cars.

Enjoy the search, the end result will be worth it!!
Regards,
Jerry

We desperately need that FAQ completed for questions just like this. I too had the same questions just recently, prior to my purchase.
