BMW battery charger q's

I have just recently purchased a BMW battery charger for my sleeping beast. (the one that plugs into to lighter socket at the bottom of the center console) I have noiticed however that this socket no longer gives power when the ignition is turned off (my cell phone adapter turns off) If this is the case will the chager actually work?? It it possible that the outlet can receive power when it doesn't give any out?

I'm sure there is a logical explanation for this.

Any help in the matter is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ryan

The power outlet is a "hot plug", as in it is hardwired to the battery. It should work witout the car on, or there is something wrong. If you intend to use a charger...you need to use the jumpstart terminals under the hood. BTW, all of this is in the manual.

Re: BMW battery charger q's

Your charge unit should have green and red lights. Red means it is being recharged; green means it is fully charged. If NO lights, you got a problem with the unit.

It turns off when I turn the car off so Idoubt something is wrong rather perhaps there is a circuit that turns off when the ignition is off to prserve the battery. Does anyone else have this issue? The red light on the charger keeps flashing as I understand it it should go solid once pulgged into the lighter socket.

Any help is appreciated as I'm stumped

Thanks guys

There is something wrong (unless the car was modified in some way) because all the E39 m5s came with hot plugs

On second thought, it MAY have been different on the euro spec models....but thats an easy test for someone with a euro M5 to do

Is there anyone with a CDN spec M5 who can verrify this? Are canadian spec cars and euro spec cars the same? The car runs and starts fine but as far as I know the battery could be on it's way out as I don't know if it has been replaced as the car is a MY2000.

If the battey was on it's last legs would this cause the red light on the charger to flash?

Sorry for all the q's guys but i'm really at a loss here and I don't want to be unpleasantly supprised come spring. If I'm gonna have to replace the bat. in the spring I guess this charger was a wast of $$ for this season. Pardon my rant

My charger (also a BMW/Mini charger) says if "Red light is flashing, the battery is NOT connected properly."

By the way, the BMW charger hooks up to the cigarette lighter, the Mini charger (same unit) has two alligator clips instead ... better for my use, although I have both.

I would like to try connecting the unit directly to the battery, however this unit only has the lighter connector. Does anyone know of where or if I can get an adapter from cigarette plut to aligator style clips? or should I dissasemble this unit and make my own althought I'm not sure which wire would be + the center contact or the side contacts.

Any other experiences/suggestions welsome as I am at a loss.

P.S. Does anyone in Canada preferably ontario know where a direct replacement battery can be had for less than the stealer?

On my (UK spec, 2001) car, the cigarette lighter socket is indeed "hot". A pain, as I have my Valentine-1 plugged into it and I have to remember to plug and unplug it when I use the car.
