Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

I'm putting in my new Axxis Delux pads today. One question as I get started -- the old pads have shims glued to their back. Do I re-use these? The Axxis pads didn't come with new shims.

I always did. The glue is anti-squeal paste.

i would bet you don't need them. Dave Zeckhausen would be the man to ask to be sure. See the top of the page for his link.

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

Hope you didn't take up on my info yet. I just realized that when I replaced the brakes on my 528, the new pads came with shims, so I tossed the old ones. I had to peel the old ones from the pads and they were a little deformed after I peeled them.

In any case, I doubt it's too important to have it or not. I'd still reuse it though since it's meant to minimize squeal, in conjunction with the paste - I think. It's pretty worn, but it's not like you're going to see it and it still good enough to use for it's purpose.

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

Thanks for the advice. I peeled off the old ones and planned to use the anti-squeal paste to bond them, but didn't like the fact that I couldn't get them flat enough. Ended up using anti-squeal alone. I kept the shims in case...

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

When I installed my Axxis Deluxe Plus pads, I noticed they didn't have shims, either. I installed them w/o shims and just used hi temp lube paste on the backs (not that rubbery orange silicone stuff). Worked just fine. Theoretically could be better feel w/o the shims since they have to compress before the pads start pressing on the rotors, but it's so minor I'd bet you couldn't tell.

Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

When I installed my Axxis Deluxe Plus pad, I didn't use the original shime either. (I don't even remember seeing this shim) But nevertheless I use the anti-squeel brake pads on the new pad, and it has been working great so far.

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

Replacement pads don't come with shims. Shims are an oem part. You can buy new ones or re-use the old ones if they are in good shape. IMHexperience, you should use the shims, in conjunction with anti-squeal. This is all non-BMW experience, but brakes are brakes.

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

I don't see the brake shim on the following diagram.
Is this something I can order from dealership ?

Re: Re-use Old Shims on Brake Pads?

You do NOT want to use the old shims on your new Axxis D+ pads. All that will do is give you a softer pedal feel without providing any benefit. Axxis D+ pads can be as quiet as OEM pads if you bed them in properly. See: http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

If you are a belt and suspenders type of guy, you could always apply a small amount of anti-squeal goo to the back of the pads, allowing it to dry for about 15 minutes before installation. You could also apply some lubricant (I prefer Permatex anti-seize paste) to the metal tabs on the pad backing plate where they contact the cast iron caliper frames.

Proper bedding reduces the tendency for the pad to vibrate at lower speeds and under light brake pedal pressure. The anti-squeal goo can further damp out any vibrations. And the lubricant applied to the contact points between pad backing plate and caliper frame can reduce the noise created by a vibrating pad. (Analogous to spraying WD-40 on the back legs of a cricket.)
