I dropped off the beast because I was having loss of power issues. At times the car felt as if its running on only 4 cylinders and did not sound right! I get a call back from the dealer and they say the codes that come up are the CAM ANGLE SENSOR BANK TWO and a VANOS fault. The dealer sais that they are just going to replace the sensor first and see if the VANOS still give a fault code. The technician claims that a bad sensor can set off a VANOS fault. Is this true? It sounds to me like they are too lazy to replace the VANOS unit and just want to patch fix the car???? Any thoughts would be great.
sounds like the right thing to do to me, especially if you're paying.
cps's fail often, vanos' do not, relatively speaking, and a bad cps can cause a vanos fault since cam timing could be off.

Actually its all under CPO warranty. I just dont understand how the cam angle sensor would have anything to do with the VANOS unit. Are they related in any way??
if i understand it correctly, the cam position sensor is involved in controling the vanos, if the cps is malfunctioning, it will result in vanos disfunction. You should run a search for 'cam position sensor' on this board, you'll find a lot of information, it's a common fault.

I understand they work together to get the variable timing. CPS fault will often show up as a VANOS code also. Since the CPS is relatively easy and cheap to fix, your dealer is being prudent to do the most likely repair from experience. It shouldn't matter who is paying. You certainly wouldn't want to pay to replace the VANOS on your nickel when a cheap CPS repair would do the trick.

Jerry

In order for the Vanos system to work properly it needs to know the precise position of the cam. It's very likely the replacment of the CPS will also make the Vanos system function properly again.
