Newbie Here- 2002 E39

Hello to all M5 aficianados!!!!

So, i am quite elated to report that i am the proud new owner of a 2002 Black/Black M5 w/ CPO from BMW. I bought it about 3 months ago with 46 k miles, and already have approx 53k miles.....what an amazing car, to say the least!!!!!! after owning a couple of M3's (one stock 1996, and then a Dinan supercharged 1998 M3 4 door)...all i can say is that my E39 is by far the best sports sedan on the road...at any price.

So, i have some questions.......first off, my car is chewing up about one bottle of Castrol 10w-30 per 800 miles...it that normal?

Second, i constantly hear a "rattle" coming from the rear...i think it is the exhaust hangers...it that a common issue on E39?

Lastly, my car is quickly approaching its Inspection II service...anyone have a idea of he cost for this...and also any tips on how to get the stealer to cover the MAF sensors....and anything else I should ask them to look out for while its in the shop?

Again, hello to all, and I look forward to many years of both contributing and providing whatever i know (which is not alot...ha.ha) to this board.

Colin

That sounds a little excessive. I've probably put in a quart, maybe two, in the last 9,000 miles.

Could be your rear sway bar brackets.

Don't know the answer to your third question. Happy motoring.

Congrats and welcome!

1. I burn around 1qt per 1.5-2K (Mobil 1 5-30) which is normal according to the techs at BMW of SD...Depends on your driving style and city/highway use...Most left coasters (from what I see) burn a little more oil since it's warmer/dryer out here year round...

2. Check your rear deck shelf inside the car...I had a similiar rattling and it turned out to be that...Plus I had them replace all the door seals -- under warranty...

3. Inspection II ran me $750 from an independent shop...MAFS are considered consumbles so you might pay that one outta pocket -- could be wrong though...

Enjoy the ride

Oil consumption seems high. I used BMW Castrol 5w-30 and burn close to none. Try the BMW Castrol 10w-60 (take a deep breath, it is expensive and pretty much only available from BMW). See if that helps consumption.
Welcome!!
Regards,
Jerry

Re: Newbie Here- 2002 E39

Welcome to the board - and CONGRATULATIONS.

Your oli consumption sounds quite high but not beyond the bounds of reality. You've clearly done a lot of miles in the last 3 months and you can easily find it chewing up a litre every 1-1.5k (depending on driving conditions, style and the oil that you use).

There have been several threads on the rear sway bars. I've not had the problem so I can't comment but have a search and see what you think. Others are better qualified to help.

Service II is a fairly big one so brace yourself.

Welcome!
I also have a MY02. I bought it back in Oct. with 38k CPO/BMW. It now has 40k. To date it hasn't burned a drop of oil. The specs call for 5w-30.
I also had a slight rattle in the rear right. It turned out the be the right sway bracket. The dealer replaced it no cost. I would guess that our driving conditions are similar.
No regrets at all from this end!

Re: Newbie Here- 2002 E39

Welcome and Congratulations! You are right it is an incretable car. So far my 2003 burns about 1 qt. every 3k miles. I recently change to 10W-60 and have not noticed any oil usage. Car runs better and smoother using 10W-60. I did the between oil change at 7K miles, before it goes to dealer for scheduled maintenance.
