Considering buying either 2000 or 2002 e39

Both are carbon black. The 2000 is from a private seller and has 75,000 miles. I can get it for about $29,500. It is very clean, has had the head work done at about 69,000 miles (dealer covered the work under CPO) and had a new clutch at about 59,000 miles. It has also had VANOS work done. So a lot of the big ticket items appear to have been addressed. The 2002 has about 41,500 miles and is under warranty until 4/06. I can get it for about $42,500. It is also fairly clean but is offered for sale by a private internet dealer that happens to be located near me. It is being checked out by a local BMW dealer. Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

If price isn't an object, always get the newest model that you can afford. On that note, it sounds like you are leaning towards the 00my. If it has the options you want, i.e. color, interior trim, and is the cleaner of the two go for that. Also, remember that you don't necessarily have to buy the car closest to you. If neither car is tugging at your heart strings, take your time and find the exact car you want. I spent over a year looking for mine and bought it on the opposite coast.

Re: Considering buying either 2000 or 2002 e39

E-bay has seen a glut of MY 2000 M5s in the last 6 months, and the prices are dropping fairly fast. Finding one for under $30k is quite likely, with even less miles than 75k. The "Trade In" value on the 2000 M5 with average miles is approx. $28k and falling every month.

That being said, remember that e-bay sales also incur shipping or your plane ticket to pick up the car. Add at least $1200 for that expense.

If you can be patient, there are some excellent deals out there.

Driven.

Re: Considering buying either 2000 or 2002 e39

sounds like the 00 has had the 'carbon build up issue' fixed already, that's worth $6-8k and some headaches. This issue will like start effecting later cars as they get milage, i think we have one or two reports of it on 02's already. If you can get a cpo warranty on the 02, it would be a bit more attractive, that way at least you might have some chance of coverage for any big ticket items that come up.

If one were CPO, I would go that route. But since the dealer is a Non BMW dealer, that part of the equation falls out.

You obviously are going to save much more with the older car. But the newer car will have less things going wrong right away. It isn't clear if the Carbon issue will impact newer cars - will only tell as time goes on.

Good luck and please share with us your decision. Either way, you get an awesome car!

If money not the deciding factor I'd go with the 02 since its still under a little bit of warranty...Good luck on your decision!

Is the internet dealer http://eimports4less.com/default.asp? I bought my 2001 from them last spring and have been very pleased with the car and with a couple of after purchase issues.

If it checks out I'd go for the newer. Probably has the 16:9 nav and the engine has the newer cylinder/rings that allows 5W-30 oil.

If it's not the one from eimports it may be worth checking.

Good luck.

Its an interesting choice. My $0.02 is I'd lean toward the '00. I'd like the security of knowing the big-ticket items were dealt with. You only have 5 months warranty on the 02, which while nice, is not exactly a deal-maker for me. For the big $ saving with the '00, you can easily cover a full-package 3rd party warranty for three years (it'll run you about $3 grand), and have lots of $$ left over for your own favorite upgrades/mods. To me, THAT sounds mighty good.

Cheers,

I bought my '00 M5 a year ago October for $42K with 42k miles on it. I now have 60k and have not had a problem. In fact with the Dinan S2 goodies, the car is simply amazing to drive. I just sold my '99 M Coupe because I never drove it. Two different cars by all means, but I am hooked on my M5. Every day the weather permits, I take the beast out and let her roar.

Yeah, the '99-'00's tend to knocked a bit as the 'first model year'. But as an '00 owner, I'm not sure this hasn't been over-played. IMHO, the only 'upgrade' with the '01-03 MYs that is worth much are the headlights. Save yourself $12 grand+, buy a pristine '00, and upgrade the headlights if you dig the light rings. I could care less about the Nav screen. I don't find myself thinking.. "gee, that Nav screen is small... wish I had a bigger one." As for steering wheel and tail lights...say what? And lastly, as for oil consumption, so I add a quart of oil once in a while between oil changes. Big frickin deal. No guarantee I wouldn't be adding a quart here and there with the '01-03's either.

My 11/99 build has been a fabulous car, with 56,000 trouble-free miles. As if you couldn't tell, I'm crazy about the thing.

Cheers,
Dave
