Automatic Sport On?
I know this has been discussed extensively, but has anyone thought of a solution for automatically turning Sport on similar to the one described in the link below? Or has any brave soul actually tried it?
http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/t...ges/DSCoff.htm
Seems like it could work...

Re: Automatic Sport On?
Theoretically, this should work fine. The big deal, is to measure the voltages on each side of the switch and be sure the capacitor is properly connected in terms of which terminal is on the (+) side of the situation. Make sure it is correct. If you are not brave enough to try this, I will for you. I'm curious myself. As an electronics dude, I can grab any one of a jillon capacitors, wires, and resistors out of my work room and head out to the car and try this out. But it's cold out there!
I'm in the middle of doing some research work on the DSP system, have my sub removed and, well...it's just too dang cold to go out there and put it back in. Goona have to clean out the garage..heat it up..(whine, whine)
It's warm in here, the beer is cold, etc.
My big question is: could you please find the info on how to pull that part of the dash? That would speed things up tremendously.
I have to go somewhere in a few minutes, and will try the intital test, which is to see what happens when I hold the sport mode switch down, when starting the car. Ie, I'll begin to hold it the moment I get into the car. Then, I'll insert the key and start the car in a normal fashion..and let go of the switch about a second or two after it is started. See what the electronics do about that....
Back in about 30-40 minutes with some sort of result, on the first half of this little experiment.

Re: Automatic Sport On?
I say just powerchip the car, thats really all they do, thats why the difference between sport on and off with powerchip is so small.

Re: Automatic Sport On?
Cold there? You should be here in Vancouver- it's freezing!
I have the Bentley manuals for the E39, so I will do some research and see what I can find in terms of removing the panel button assembly. I'm not much of an electronics whiz at all, but if there is something in the manuals which might help let me know.

Powerchip for $1000 or mod the switch for $2? Hmmmm...

All it says in the Bentley Manual (612-12) is the following (no diagrams or pics):
- "Gently pry out switch panel using plastic pry tool"
- CAUTION- To prevent marring interior trim, work with plastic prying tools or wrap the tips of screwdrivers and pliers with tape before prying out switches or electrical accessories.
- Disconnect plug connectors and remove switch panel
- Installation is reverse of removal
KBK: Note that the above is for the E39 ASC/DSC/seat heater switches - it is not specifically for the M5 switch assembly with the SPORT button, but I can only imagine it is identical?!?! Hope that helps. Let me know the progress or if I can lend support in any way..

Re: Automatic Sport On?
Sshouldn't be too hard to change the crossover settings. The coding should be standard to what the DSP 54004 will accept, so there's no mystery there. Then, flash a prom and presto, wide open or whatever is desired on all 12 channels. Personally, I'd like to do some impuse or waterfall response testing and get a decent step response out of the system. Why they could not do that with the DSP as is, (in situ?) is absolutely beyond me. But enough of that. If I want to make some chump change for my effort, I'd best be keeping it mum from now on. I mean the DSP is designed from the start to give them the most insanely decent audio you can imagine..so I'm having a difficult time figuring out how they could screw it up so badly. Well, I CAN, but it's not for public discussion.
As for the swtich, I did the experiment of holding it, three times, to be sure...so it looks like it is going to have to be a simple TIMING CIRCUIT (555) put in there instead. This can be done with a handful of parts and a simple 555 8 pin chip. (this is already more than enough information to go and google a few examples) The boards for this can be bought off the internet for a few bucks, complete and built. Simply wire it in the right way, and presto, both DSC and/or Sport mode magically alter their original 'stock' starting positions, every time you step into the car. BTW, they will work perfectly normally too.
Liability requires that you do this yourself. I can report on how I DID MY OWN, but that's it. no more.

Re: Automatic Sport On?
So the capacitor / resistor solution on its own won't work?

Re: Automatic Sport On?
That is correct, I very much suspect. The thing is supposedly, similar to holding the button, if I read what he wrote correctly.
The E39 won't fall for this trick.
But the answer is STILL 'relatively' simple.
I have not pulled the switch yet, but the assembly should ahve three wires going to it. A general ground, a signal wire, and a indicator (LED) (+) positive wire. Press the button once, and it sends 'tick' or a activation 'pulse' to the ECU, and the ECU sends back a signal that turns either the LED on, or OFF..depending on the state (condition) of the 'sport' mode. That would be the simple way..but I doubt it is that simple.
I'd even venture that the software/hardware may have multiple settings or design points, as the BMW crew may have experimented with the idea of the sport mode being the default mode.... and simply programmed the system so it wasn't.
