What are all the difference between the pre and post facelift M5s?

My friend is looking to get an M5 very soon and we're trying to figure out all the differences. Just from looking we see

Steering wheel
gauges
headlights
nav

What are we missing? Thanks!

The engine is slightly different (block, pistons and rings I think) in an attempt lower the engines thirst for oil

So anything else I'm missing? And 2001 was the change over year, yes? When (if ever) did nav go to DVD? I know it was 2003.5 on the M3 so I'm thinking maybe it never happened for the M5.

Related question: can you change the CD drive to DVD and keep the original 4:3 nav head unit if you buy an older M5?

Re: What are all the difference between the pre and post facelift M5s?

the only reported engine change was piston rings, which was phased in in the year 2000, after 3/00 production you had the new ring design.
No difference in reported performance.

the dvd nav was introduced in 03, yes you can retrofit it to any earlier model year, plug and play. Will work with either 4/3 or 16/9 head unit, but i think the text and images looked a bit "squished" on the 4:3 screen

the rest of the visual updates were done beginning in 01 model year.

Re: What are all the difference between the pre and post facelift M5s?

It was late in MY 03 that they put in the DVD nav.

To use the DVD nav properly, you need the 16:9 screen (due to the splitscreen).

Future - F10 M5 with manual transmission?

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."
