          Fan belt gone

          Hi,

On the way home just now, my fan belt went as I accelerated hard off some lights. The steering went very stiff and the battery light came on. I pulled out the remnants of the belt and limped the rest of the way home, swithching off and coasting as often as possible. (Blimey, the steering is unbelievably heavy without power assistance!). The temp got into the red but I carried on - it never quite reached the top of the red on the gauge. (!) I did a search but only 2 E34 links came up, so,

          I guess I have 2 questions......

          Have I done any damage?

How hard / how much to fix?!

          Cheers for any help guys,

          Barney.

should be ok...as long as the water pump belt was still working.

Thanks KirklandM5. As far as I could see the other belt is still intact, so fingers crossed she'll be ok. I only ran for 15 mins or so in the red, and as I say, I switched it off and coasted regularly.

          Cheers.

Keep an eye out for oil in your coolant....running in the red for any period of time could easily blow the head gasket

My BMW tech told me NEVER to take a chance on driving when in a situation like that, after something similar happened to me. Call the flatbed...

Further investigation has shown the power steering pump pulley to have fractured and the 2 tensioning pulleys to be lose. This could be expensive....!

Hmm, if out of warranty, seems like a perfect time to consider underdrive pulleys!

Sure, a couple of vendors sell them, I got mine from Evosport. You get a smaller power steering pump pulley, and depending on kit, either a smaller alternator pulley or a lighter weight standard size alternator pulley. The pulleys underdrive the apparatus, so the components turn a little slower, thereby saving some small amounts of horsepower. I am not sure if there any real hp gains, but the engine certainly seems to rev much more easily. Take a look at :
