Ran out of gas

I just had the bad experience of running out of gas. I was at idle and tried turning the engine over a few times to get the car out of an intersection. I have heard that this can damage the fuel pump and engine, but after putting some gas in it started right up and runs fine. Does anybody know if I should be concerned about anything?

By the way, the reason I ran out is that my obc indicated 20 miles to go when I left my house. I was on vacation for two weeks and had forgotten how long the indicator lamp had been on and based on prior experience I trusted the obc. After going approx. 5 miles to the market after which I was going to hit the gas station it suddenly dropped its estimate to 0 miles and in fact let me go another 4-5 miles until I ran out literally in front of the gas station.
