Do M5 Headlights auto off??

Just curious..

If you turned your car off and left the lights on.. Unknowingly.

WILL the LIGHTS TURN OFF by themselves?? Or NO??

reason I asked.. I found myself jumping out a couple of times
and closing the door to realize I left the lights on.
Which is a PITA when your hands are full..

Re: Do M5 Headlights auto off??

headlamps go off with the ignition, rest of the lights (parking, dash etc) stay on. Perhaps it may all power off after a few minutes like the interior lights do if you leave a door open, when the car goes into 'sleep mode'.

My car makes a sound when I open the door and the lights are still on. Does yours not do that?

Re: Do M5 Headlights auto off??

The answer is "it depends". I thought 2001 & prior, they'll stay on but you'll get a ding. Per the '02 manual, only the parking lights stay on. In '02 or '03 in auto mode, all lights shut off immediately. I use that all the time. In all years you can flip the high beam lever towards you to activate a 60 second delay. Although I believe that is after you shut off the lights but before opening the door.

Re: Do M5 Headlights auto off??

Yea it dings and display shows on the dash

but sometimes im in a hurry or just a little stoned and forget. = ).

There has been a couple of times i did,
and I wondered. Hmmm wonder if they would turn off by themselves.
Car is so high tech and computerized, i just wondered.

Off topic: @ what temperature does your Car ding?? Mind dings me when it gets
37degree F. And it also dinged today at 31F. Is it auto set for that or
is it programmable??

thanks

It dings at 37F because that is when bridges and overpasses freeze. I believe 37F is the default factory setting. It is programmable, though, through the dealership.

Re: Do M5 Headlights auto off??

Just to clarify... for '00, parking lights do NOT automatically go off. I left mine on and came back three hours later and they were still on.

Cheers,

Re: Do M5 Headlights auto off??

On my 2000:

If you turn the key off while the lights are on, they turn off immediately - the parking lights will remain lit.

You can turn the lights on with the key out of the ignition by pulling on the dimmer stalk - first few times this happened to me I had knocked it with my knee getting out of the car and I couldn't figure out why my lights were on! But in any case, it is a "follow me home" feature - when turned on this way they will remain lit for about 60 seconds and shut off.

Re: Do M5 Headlights auto off??

Turn signal/dimmer. Flip towards you (same as flash-to-pass).
