Where is the DME ?

I wanted to know where the DME was located and how to take it out (i.e. tools needed etc). I could find any clean answer when searching. I believe it is somewhere on the left side when you open the hood but where and how to get to it ?

Thanks

Re: Where is the DME ?

Fitting Instructions BMW E39 M5 4.9 ECU REMOVAL
Allocate an hour towards the removal of your BMW M5 ECU.
It should be done when you are not rushed for time, and can concentrate on the installation.
Tools Required.
• 10mm wrench
• Allen Key Set (long)
• Flat blade screwdriver

Locating & Access To ECU.
ECU Location.
Locate the Siemens E.C.U. This is located in the engine bay under the passengers side pollen filter assembly, next to the firewall.

Access & Removal of ECU.
To access the ECU on the BMW M5, you must first remove the pollen filter. The thin metal clip holding the filter assembly onto the strut tower must also be removed.

The big pipe coming from the engine into the filter assembly can now be disconnected.

Remove the pollen filter assembly by removing the clip that attaches it to the strut tower. The pollen filter assembly should now be allowed to move freely.

The ECU cover will have 4 Allen key screws, in which only 2 are visible. To expose the remaining screws the cover nearer the firewall should be removed. To remove this cover, use a 10mm wrench to loosen the bolt that is on the side of the car. It is not necessary to remove this bolt. Remove this small cover to expose all remaining allen key bolts.
Use an Allen key to undo the bolts. Once all bolts have been removed, remove the cover. The ECU should now be visible.
Using flat head screwdriver, remove the first and last plug. This enables better access to the other plugs.

Remove First and Last Plug First

To remove the middle plugs all that is required to do is push the release button on the plug and pull leaver releasing the plug.

Push button to release leaver

Pull leaver down releasing plug

Once this is done the ECU may be removed, by gently manoeuvring the ECU upwards. When refitting the ECU ensure that the ECU lines up in the channel in the cradle.

Hope this helped

Thanks a lot Sean,
It was just like you said, very easy. I took all your advice except for "It should be done when you are not rushed for time, and can concentrate on the installation." I was very careful but had a 2 yr old about to wake up in 30mins. So as soon as I located the unit I took the time and labeled the wires that were connected to the DME (1,2,3, etc) just to know which one goes in first then I disconnected everything and took out the DME. As soon as I rushed back to the house I saw my son wide awake watching football (Skins -vs- Chiefs). To think all that rushing for nothing not knowing that my boy can sit up and watch a game. Anyway thanks and I will be sending this to DA tomorrow for reprogramming.

Late
