Just came back. Some of us (me incl.) expected M5 Touring and M6 Convertible, but the news for the BMW M5 and M6 of 2006 was as we knew Start button as well as 305 km/h limiter on the European and Asian BMW M5. Warranty and Fahrertraining included for a bit more than €2000. Can be done afterwards as wel las before delivery. However we got to talk to BMW M Director Ulrtich Bruhnke again, which we was very nice of him considering his tight schedule. I will write a complete report within some days ?????? but some notes follow below. Also, we could not ask all the 45+ questions since we realized he really was short on time.

  • Individual for USA is being looked into and that wont be fixed this year, maybe next year. Ordering Individual is a problem in USA because alot of US customers are changing their orders under the timeframe of 8 weeks, and this cannot be doen with Individual, so dealers are afraid of being stuck with a rare colour they cannot sell. However, they now the problem and they are working omn it right now.
  • Manual gearbox gearing etc is not yet decided, development is still udnerway.
  • Power is +/- 5%, thereby it can have 530 HP sometimes
  • 305 km/h limiter is chosed because BMW M want to "soirt out" all the tyre manufacturers that cannot make >300 km/h tires.
  • "There will be more news during this year..." Bruhnke told us with a smile.
Some more general news:

  • AC Schnitzer presented thir kit to the M5. Go here for pics. Hamann as well, go here for pics. I think AC Schnitzer really have continued their "new" styling language with alot of chrome and I would almost say the "cash register sound" than begins with a b... Hamann had their version as well. I have seen AC Scnitzer, Hamann and Hartge kits for the M5 and I prefeer the Hartge the most. Some parts from exterior or interiour are nice on both the AC Schnitzer and Hamann but as a complete package Iprefeer Hartge design that goes more in line with BMW own design.
  • Alpina showed the B6 Convertible and the cheapest Alpina yet: D3 with 200 HP, a diesel 3 series.
  • Audi RS4 will have the carbon brakes from A8 W-12 6,0 as an option.

Exhaust will get louder when you press the sport button. Only Sedan planned for USA in the beginning.
  • Alot more news will be posted in the upcoming report. Oh, I met Bangle again, but I did not talk to him...
Bruhnke, head of BMW M division :M5rev:

the start/stop button-I thought this would be avaialble for us cars too
thanks for the report Gustav!!
too bad BMW didn't show the M5 Touring, M6 Cabriolet, M Roadster, M3 Concept... like rumors suggested.

riaz, yes the start/stop button will be available for North American M5 as well. as a matter of fact, all 5 and 6 series will have them after September.

Re: A short update from Geneva (BMW M, Alpina and the tuners)

Do you still have to put the key fob into the steering column and then push the start button, if so that is retarded!!! JOsh

Sorry for the rant/question, nice pics and thanks for the report

Any pics of B6 convertible?? I am considering ordering one of these cars for myself. What is the approximate price? (euros or dollars?)

only if you have "Comfort Access", then you only need to keep your key on you. otherwise, you'll still need to put the key fob into the key slot.

2) What trim is in the M5, a carbon fiber look alike?
I think Gustav got the pics a bit mixed up there. The 2 interiour pics at the top are of an M6 and the one at the bottom is of an M5. You can tell by the shape of the dash. So yes that is the carbon fiber look-a-like which you can order for 300 euro extra, on an M6. :)

Two questions:

1) What happens when you get the - 5 % :nono:

2) What trim is in the M5, a carbon fiber look alike?
the trim in the M5 is the standard Alu. and in M6, it's the optional carbon fiber trim. as i understand, carbon fiber trim is not available for M5 from BMW.

Ah yes, I was about to say to Nelson that that did not look like aluminum on the M5... but it was the 6. :)

If you opt for 'comfort access' will the steering column still have that slot to insert the fob should you choose to do so (or so the valet folks aren't like wtf)?

well, technically, you can still do like how you'd do with conventional cars with Comfort Access cars.

you can still press door unlock to unlock the doors, insert the key into the slot then press the start button to fire the engine. however, those are a bit unnecessary. but in the case of valet, it'll probably at least save you some time explaining the technology to the valet.

Thanks. That's exactly my concern... having to explain it to the valet and potential mishaps that can happen if there wasn't a slot to put it in. I try to stay away from valet as much as I can but living and working in a big city, sometimes it's the only option.

the rumours are that M5 Touring and M6 Cabriolet were there but only people working at BMW were allowed to see them. Too bad for the public.

This year or next year?

My wife has a new 320i this has the Start button, she has only had it 3 weeks and twice BMW Assist has been called out because once the car would not start when the button was pushed, and the 2nd time she could not get the key out, she was lucky that she was in a customers car park as she had to leave the car to go to a meeting!!!

I am glad I have a normal key system.
