I was driving my M5 yesterday and the DSC light as well as Brake and ABS lights came on. At restart, they are off, and then come on in a few seconds. I held DSC button for a few seconds in an attempt to turn it off, but no success.
Also, when the lights first came on, the car felt a little weird, as if the brakes briefly actuated by themselves, and then the lights came on right away.
Anyone have any experience on potential causes? I don't have a fault code reader in my possession at the moment.
I have all these symptoms currently, ABS light on, Brakes light on, DSC light on, Speedo not working, Range on OBC bouncing all over the place and mirrored by the fuel gauge which at one point showed full whereas the hidden menu said it had 16 litres, and my fuel consumption is 0 litres per 100km.
no not a breakdown. Just means back left speed sensor is out. I think that is right but do some searching I have not dealt with the speedo out issue so don't know absolutely it is that wheel. When the speedo goes too it is a particular wheel speed sensor, i know that. You got lucky you know which one it is. Well sort of.
I think you're right, I recall that the sensor on that wheel informs the speedo, without that input the ECU thinks the car is stationery so no speed, no range, no ABS, no tyre control etc.
DSC light was on in the wife's 530i - used Mike S. INPA setup (thanks Mike) to validate the codes and had the unit rebuilt by BBA - $180. It took longer to box the thing up and mail it off than it did to remove it and re-install!
You can also search E-Bay for BMW ABS and you'll find BBA listed (as a $180 rebuild service) with a nice simple summary (their website is a little challenging as it references part numbers for everything, etc.). There are other companies that do this too (i.e. module masters, etc.), but prices can vary substantially.
You are lucky, I had to change my ABS module this week and all is back now (speedo, cruise control, mileage). Besides I think I got the highest mileage M5 ever, my key reported 903168km (501203miles)
So this morning I was driving into work and hit a dip in the road. Not even big.
After that my ABS, DSC and Brake light started flashing randomly. The radio also stopped working. I continued for a while longer as I was almost at work already.
As I was turning into work the car actually turned off. and I restarted and no lights or issues again.
I will be checking the grounding points this evening and hoping to get a GT1 or diagnostic tool on the car. Hoping that this was just a fluke...
radio, nav screen, cluster, all went out when the car shut off.
prior to that when I was driving and the ABS, DSC and Brake lights were flashing intermittently the radio had cut out. The nav flashed a few times. Radio came back on for a couple seconds. The cluster was working fine. HVAC was working fine.
I had DSC and ABS-Brake light come on and STAY on after a pretty good (bad) wheel hop burnout this wkd. Mechanic said it was the ABS module and not related to the wheel hop. Did not make sense to me but after replacing the ABS module all fixed (that is what was diagnosed by their computer). I hope that is what it is as it was not cheap.
I'm having the same issue as Davidc, just recently my ABS, DSC lights started flickering on and off and then if im idling sometimes the car just shuts off. The radio will stop working for a few seconds then turn back on. The first time it happened my date and time settings were reset as well as my trip meter
I'm hoping this will show up in the codes if it turns out to be a faulty abs sensor, and will try to check the underhood grounding points to see if that helps.
Wiggled all the grounding points under the hood and those were fine, moved on to the battery and noticed the black wire was loose and had some slight corrosion. Knocked off the corrosion, pushed it all the way down on the terminal and tightened it back up. Looks to have solved that issue phew! ouich
Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction!
got my oil change at a local BMW specialized shop here in Jacksonville - Sam's Automotive, a very honest shop that i've been taking her to for years. they mentioned i needed to get my rear brakes replaced so i scheduled it - a couple of days later i got my Christmas tree lights in the dash with ABS, DSC off, Brake (yellow) lights on.
Sam and his team cleared out the fault and drove the car around for testing.
turns out it is the control unit for the ABS pump that controls the hydraulics on your ABS brakes. pump tested fine, the lines tested fine, but unfortunately the control unit has to be replaced ($1,200 just for the part), plus labor which includes marrying the control unit software into the main E60 software unit.
car is still there in the shop so i'm waiting for the final damage report - when all said and done estimate is $1900 for ABS control unit parts + labor, plus brake replacement which i was going to replace the rotors, but now i'm trying to have them saved at $340 EACH x 2 + labor. out the door close to $3Gs.

There are a couple of companies that repair the ABS module. Under $300 if I remember and no recoding needed. They claim fast turnaround time, but you can drive without the ABS module. Easy in and out, just sitting up top on the passenger side of the engine compartment. There is also a DIY repair here, bad solder joints from age is the typical problem.
thanks Jerry - Sam and his team at the shop are indeed looking for a "rebuilt" module (sans kit) hopefully in the $3-400 range they said.
i have been driving the past week with this condition and it did not affect drivability. only problem is, no ABS, no DSC in a 500bph car does not feel very comfortable - so i'd rather have them fix it and have peace of mind |:->

Rebuilt means yours rebuilt, correct? !! Otherwise, probably need dealer recoding, $$$$$. BBA is one of the known rebuilders (they take apart, clean and resolder the connections among other things...) so having your own rebuilt is the way to go. You should be able to drive a car with no ABS or DSC for a couple of days, just dial it back a little bit........... :nono:
Missed the extra 100 hp in your sig, most stock M5's have only about 400--congrats!!!
Thanks Jerry - i stumbled into the E39 board because of my original ABS problem search.
but i have DEFINITELY already researched the charcoal removal, just haven't had the courage (or the time) to do the mod yet. i already have AFE drys as replacement filters and have the desire to do the RPI scoops as well. i just have to see how much the ABS control board is going to set me back i've also seen some MAF sensor problems reported on the board with the charcoal removals (hence the lack of courage). could be implementation error on the user, but nonetheless...
