Looks to be in good shape with the repaint and the rebuild. I believe the owner is a member of this board so sorry to post, just wondering what everyone's thoughts are. I'm definitely interested.
IMO, an example like this one that has been completely sorted is worth at least as much as the lower mileage cars with original, 15 year old, rubber that have been selling on BaT. However, I may be in the minority.
I agree with you. I would rather have a high mileage, highly maintained car, than overpay for a low mileage car that has been sitting for years that will need a lot of $$$ thrown at it to get it sorted.
Looks good to me. What car today that isn't a garage queen HASN'T had some sort of body work whether it's repainted on certain parts or replaced body panels or even PDR.
Glenn,
Nice looking car, but if you read the discussion following the description, the car has had its catalytic converters removed, which means it may not be able to pass NJ emissions. With the reported accident, the modifications, the mileage, the wrong wheels, etc., it will never move into "collectible" status, if that is what you are looking for. Others may have differing opinions, but I would expect the car to sell in the $12-15k range. Probably a fun car if you can get it registered here.
Yes I read about the catalytic converters. I didn't think it would be collectable but a nice driver I could enjoy and not worry about adding mileage, etc. Since I change cars like most people change their socks, I would want to make sure I could sell it for what I bought it for (in the ball park).
Don't do it to me, Glenn! I've been stalking this car out and corresponding with the owner for what seems like weeks now. It took a big jump today, and I'm looking for it for the same reason as you. Not to collect, but to drive. You've already got enough fun toys, throw me a bone here!
Yes, we need to make a video of your amazing F80....
So if you buy this I will see it at C & C ? Its one thing to lose an auction but to lose to a friend and have to see the car you could have bought every weekend, LOL.
that being said, it probably at the max for me. By the time I pay sales tax, shipping and buy cats to pass inspection, I spent more than its worth.
I would say 15k would be a good price to get it at but I think it's worth it up to 17k. It looks like the car was well cared for and the work was done well. That being said I think the color is what gives it that value. I see a lot of e39 m5s on Craigslist in the 10k-15k range... Most are black though.
Speaking of worth this one has already gone over my estimate as I would have put it at $20K and it is above $21 already and a few hours to go, but it is a properly sorted car and looks stunning!
This my soon to be sold M5. I just realized that this thread was created, sorry for not been active on it.
I have enjoyed this car a lot, especially working on it.
I hope it goes to a good owner that will care for it and drive it!
I don't know why people make a big deal about cats. You can buy a pair of used stock cats from Adam (Clemster) for $300-400? that a shop will weld in for another $350ish maybe less, maybe more, but I can't see having to spend more than $600-1,000 in parts and labor to get cats back on the car. If you're going to pony up $20k+ for the car, surely you can afford $1k to make it "legal" in your state.
Glad to see this car going for over $20k. It's worth it IMO and helps the values of the rest of our cars.
This give me reassurance that spending the money on refreshing the S62 instead of going forced induction was the right decision. Maybe my next one I will do both.... stay tuned.

Absolutely! Can't wait to see what comes out of your hard work next time, Joel. Still a bit ornery this evening....
As I said via text, keep me posted and you may have a car sold before the build is finished if you're not trying to keep it. (No FI for me on that one though..)
$24k tho... that's a big number. Lots of confidence in seller there - I was a buyer up to about 22 initially this morning, then tried to jump in at 23750 and was late on the trigger. At some point had to draw the line.
No kidding. A car with an accident history, a marked Carfax and "heaven forbid!" paintwork (said in jest) plus 143,000 miles sells for $26,500...kind of destroys the mantra of many potential buyers who come on this site and believe that if a car has had "paintwork" it's now tainted and next to worthless. I know of numerous E30 M3s that have sold for crazy numbers with substantial "paintwork" -- of course like many cars that have turned into collector desired ones.
If E39 M5s are going to "breakout" in price upward (i.e. "the rest of the bunch" really start follow the ultra-low mileage leaders that long ago broke out strongly upward), significantly breakout that is (not just the appreciation rate they've seen in the last 5 years), it will start with results like this auction set. It will also be accompanied by a very large majority of owners/admirers/etc who will proclaim loudly and with all sorts of "evidence from experience" that such a price appreciation will never happen. This is the way ALL price breakouts happen. The masses aren't onboard. A true breakout CAN'T happen if there's a widespread belief it will. Fear, uncertainty, doubt all will prevent the vast majority from "buying the breakout". The train will leave the station while the majority is certain beyond any doubt it will revisit the price they want to pay so they can get on board.
You could take it even further I suppose. I think it's got to be shipped from FL to CA. $2k. Oh and add cats to smog it. Buyer's in over $30k invested by time it hits the roads in CA. But, that car's a real head turner, there won't be any buyers remorse there.
Well as stated before someone is getting a well sorted E39 M5 and should have years to enjoy it.
