I took delivery of my M5 on December 2000. After all those years and 185k miles, I'm planning to retire my E39. I will miss this car so much. After 17 years of driving it every day, it became a part of me. It will be hard..
I should get my new M3 around the beginning of October.

Are you selling it or retiring it as a daily and keeping it? I don't know that I could keep a car that long and then just let it go right away. Care to share any current pictures of the car? There's just not that many one owner E39 M5s out there. I'm the third owner of mine and thought that was pretty good.

I will probably sell it. There are a couple of things I need to fix before I sell lit, like the rear shade, and the LED display in the instrument cluster (some dots are missing).
But I will have to really like the buyer before I let her go :smile

Here are some nice photos taken about half a year ago, after a spa day (wash/wax).

Congratulations. What are your specifications? I presume you ordered a manual transmission.

I know you saw my post about my experiences with two cars. I have to say, as much as I like my F80 M3, I really enjoy still having the M5 for occasional drives; it really is a special car. You might regret it if you let her go after 17 years...

I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to let this car go..
For perspective, when I bought the car, my son was 13 years old, on Wednesday he is turning 30..
The M5 is exceptional. It drives like a dream, a perfect balance between civilized and sporty.. And even after 185k miles, it is solid, powerful, and still looks good.

My M3 is: Mineral white, Silverstone interior, aluminum trim, Comp package, Exec package, Moonroof, manual transmission.

In most cases, our car with that mileage would go $10k give or take. I don't think that is the case with this car. There is a significant value in a one owner car to the auto enthusiast. The OP's car, the 911 Turbo referenced above, the E28 M5 with 300k on the clock I'm sure most have seen online; when I think of the value of these cars "cheap" does not come to mind.

That's quite the automotive relationship! The longest I've held onto a car is about 5.5 years. Although I've never put as much blood, sweat, and hours into a car either. Well, money too.

There's a guy in my building that has a new M4 and he let me drive it the other day. Crazy fast but I don't know...definitely didn't feel as special as the M5.

Hope you enjoy your M3 but if you have the room, I'd keep the M5.

I would advise to consider just letting the car go. I'm into year five of owning my E90 M3 therefore year 5 of "holding onto it" with my M5 (into year 14 of owning it). The M5 has been driven about 2500 miles in those 5 years (66k total at moment). It's always been garaged 24/7, essentially never in rain, etc. I don't need a daily driver, so that's not a consideration. However, at this point after all these years, I've used up my intrigue with holding onto this great car -- meaning the pro/con list of simply holding this car year after year has shifted for me. If the right buyer came along, I guess I'd sell and not plan on looking back. :dunno:

I'm currently in negotiations on an Imola E39, but your LMB would look killer paired up with my LMB F80. I'm too new here to PM, but please send me something quickly with your asking if you're serious to move it. I'm not an E39 owner, but knowledgeable, and understand that teh EAG pricing model is out of whack.

Supposed to close on this deal by Friday but for the right, low mileage, LMB car I'd have to consider it.

Hey A
How are you. I just got back into an E39. Amazing you still have yours. Let's connect if you're still in the area.

Do not sell your m5. You will regret it.

I only spent 4 years with mine. Got fed up with all the issues I was having and all the work that it needed. I ended up getting a 2014 z4 35is and planned to sell my m5. I could not get myself to do it. The new cars are GREAT but they are missing soul. I don't know what it is, but the new BMW's feel like appliances to me.

Drove the Z everyday for about a month. Started modding the n54 and was quite impressed with its power. Then about 1.5 months into ownership I started the m5 again. I smiled so hard bringing it out of storage. I dont care that its old. I dont care that its slow compared to the new stuff. There is nothing out there that comes close to the e39 M5.

Anyways I ended up buying an e39 parts car and I am now in the process of making MY2000 m5 great again. Full interior/engine swap. She will have another 10 years left in her when Im done! Ill probably sell the Z in a year or so.

Can't go wrong with Imola or LMB. Both striking colors for the M5.

OP - I'm in the same boat, my M rarely gets driven and I'm on the fence about selling her. When I don't drive, I want to sell and move on. When I do get a chance to take her out for a drive, I get hooked and back to square one :| Fortunately, I have another 'fun' car for the weekends but it's a totally different animal.

Once I have my M3 here, I will put the M5 up for sale.. Probably around mid September..
