DMTL and Multiple Misfire Codes

Hi guys, hoping to get some insight on some codes I'm reading on my 2000 M5 w/ 113K miles. I'm using the Schwaben scanning tool. Here is the list:

DME: Misfiring, cylinder 1 without cylinder output
DME: Misfiring, cylinder 3 without cylinder output
DME: Misfiring, cylinder 4 without cylinder output
DME: Misfiring, cylinder 5 without cylinder output
DME: D5 Misfiring, cylinder 6 without cylinder output
DME: Misfiring, cylinder 7 without cylinder output
DME: Misfiring, several cylnders without cylinder output
DME: Fuel System diagnosis, bank 1
DME: Fuel System diagnosis, bank 2
DME: DMTL module, tank leakage

Car is running perfectly fine as now, so I know the misfire codes are false reads. I reset them and they came back 2 days later (I ran the car once between then without the code coming back). No misfire code on cylinder 2 or 8, interestingly. From some of the searching I found the last on my list to most likely be the culprit, meaning I should replace the Fuel Leak diagnosis pump (DMTL). This is what I was planning on purchasing: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-bosch-parts/leak-diagnosis-pump/16136756440~bos/
If I'm on the right track, is there anything else I should replace while in there?
What I was not able to find was whether or not all these misfire codes are a normal result of the pump code, or if this is most likely an additional problem? Any help from the board would be appreciated.

The plugs were done in 2014, and the MAFs wre done in 2015, according to the PO's records. I don't know the mileage at those times, but I know the owner was barely driving the car over the last few years. I purchased it last fall.

In 2006, the following was done: swapped left and right VANOS solenoid packs, replaced solenoid valve, gasket, and cover. This is the only VANOS related service I have in my records.

It definitely has the rattle on start up, but the idle is fine. The only comment I have is the exhaust is definitely a little smelly. To me it has an eggy smell to it. Decent amount of black soot from the exhaust. I attributed this to carbon buildup.

Only one of your misfires has a code with it and it is a misfire in warmup. Warmup misfires are near impossible to notice unless the code shows up. If you could include the code numbers that would help.
You could have a real issue that would only show up when the evap valve opens which could then show up as your fuel codes. The DMTL could have a leak but if the evap valve is closed then it would not be an air leak to the engine. As soon as the evap valve opened your engine would have a vacuum leak. just guessing until you post the code numbers.
Inclined to agree the misfires are not related to the fuel or DMTL code and Vanos work in 2006 is very overdue now.

I will read the codes again this weekend and report back. I only had a picture in my phone of the Schwaben screen I was referencing from a few weeks back. I've been dailying the car since and it has been fine. I will use the Bavarian Technic software when I do it again.

Did you ever get these codes resolver? I am getting the "DME: DMTL module, tank leakage" P1446 code now for about a week.

Checked and replaced my gas cap but still there. Trying to connect the dots to anything I did lately and all I can think of is jacking up the car from the front driver side minutes after I filling up my tank...could I have tilted the tank and allowed gas to overflow into the charcoal canister?

I dropped the ball on this. *flamesuit on* I've been lazily driving the car for a few weeks still with the CEL and haven't gotten around to much more investigation. It is still running just fine. I may be taking the car to a local BMW shop in the nearish future for timing chain service, so if I don't have it resolved by then, I will see what he says about it.

I suggest starting a new thread. In it, be sure to state year, mileage, relevant recent maintenance, codes and any symptoms.

It is fine to revive old threads, better that they are useful and this one went no where. In your new post give us the codes not just definitions as this OP did and maintenance on the vanos, specifically whether any work has been done to the Vanos solenoids and if the CPS are the updated ones or the old original, if you know.

Thanks. I actually posted in the E60 forum as mine was E60 specific issue. Not sure if E39 diagnostics can relate to E60

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
