How much is my car worth?

Hi all,

I am looking to put up my Silverstone Metallic 2000 MY E39 M5 with 117k miles for sale. I've been fortunate enough to finally get into a 3-pedal M4 and it's time to part ways with my beloved E39 M5.

The car is very well maintained, I have a binder of service invoices from the birth of the car that have been passed down from the original owner. It was a Dinan S1 car (it has the plaque with the serial number under the hood and the Dinan badging on the trunk). However, the original owner kept the Dinan exhaust & intake, as well as the strut brace when I purchased it from him. I replaced the OEM mufflers with Eisenmann sport mufflers and the OEM intake with the AFE intake system and I have been utterly happy with that setup. Additionally I have an AC Schnitzer rear sway bar on there as well.

Most recent services I had done with under 500 miles on them include the following:

Front and rear sway bar end links
Camshaft position sensors x2 (both banks)
Throttle position sensors x2 (both banks)
OEM throttle actuator
Rear integral links
Rear ball joints
Rear axle assembly (exchange output shaft and collar nut)
Idler arm
Vanos rebuild, sensors, and seals
OEM thermostat, with BMW factory coolant
OEM clutch, pressure plate, and release bearing
4 Riken Raptor ZR performance street tires (275/35-18, 245/40-18)
4 wheel high speed computer Hunter alignment
Stoptech pads and slotted Stoptech rotors
New Interstate Battery (3/2017)
Crankcase vent valves
Synthetic 10w60 LiquiMoly oil and Mahle filter
NGK Iridium spark plugs (x8)
2x OEM Cabin air filters
Power steering flush
Brake fluid flush

Non-maintenance but cosmetic upgrades I've done are as follows:

OEM Hella angel eye headlights (retained factory D2S Xenon ballasts)
DEPO 2001-2003 Euro tail lights
OEM Bosch windshield wipers
Brand new OEM E39 M5 floor mats with heavy duty heel pad
OEM 16.9 Navigation
OEM MKIII radio system with updated firmware
OEM 2001-2003 Instrument cluster replaced by BMW (no dead pixels)
OEM 2001-2003 M5 steering wheel (all buttons functional)
ECS Tuning carbon fiber flat rear diffuser
ECS Tuning matte black kidney grills to match the bumper trim

Can anyone help me with what to realistically expect for my car price wise? The E39 M5 market is very interesting to say the least. I don't want to list it at an unrealistic number, and I am fully aware that I am not going to make back what I put into the car, but I'd truly appreciate your feedback on what to realistically expect for the car. Once I get some nice shots of it I'm sure I'll post it on the forum as well.

Thank you all for your advice and input in advance.

I'd estimate 12-13k. Pre-01's are just not as desirable as 01-03's from my experience, because of the facelift and the piston ring changes. I know when I was searching for mine, I was looking for 01-03's exclusively, and there are many others like me.

I don't really like threads/questions like this because it's all about what someone will pay...

Saw an 2000 Avus with over 190k miles sell on here for over $17k? (If I am not mistaken). Then you see other 2000s sell for low teens. Again, it's what someone is willing to pay. I won't even get into 2000 vs 2001- 03 debate.

Agree with @jdauria . Your best bet is probably to scan this site, BaT and AutoTrader for recent sales and base asking price on that. Cosmetic condition is also very important so how well you present the car will impact the price you can expect to get.

Considering Silverstone is one of my favorite M5 colors and its a MY2000 color only it might bring a bit more money over others like silver or black.

Chris,
Thank you all very much for your input. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback. Definitely agree, as with any car it comes down to what someone is willing to pay. Hopefully I'll have an ad up next week or so once I have the chance to take some nice photos of her.

With regard to the E39 M5 market, the numbers are all over the place and I assume that they reflect the condition of the car. If the thing has been thoroughly gone through with invoices to prove, then theoretically it will command a higher price point. But if it's a flip someone got a good deal on and wants to make a quick buck on, they may not know of any apparent issues or may not even be as knowledgable of the car as some of us are, thus being offered at a lower price point.

I know I'm not going to come close to breaking even to what I have into the car, but that's the price you pay for being a car guy! Ironically, I've never had this happen with any of my Porsche's. My E46 M3, E63 AMG, and S5 were different stories...
